This is one way of going forward.
You can also use development boot flow if that suits your use case. In that case you can keep kernel in rootfs partition and let u-boot pick it up.

I am not sure if I understand the question correctly.

You can boot the combined_opt.appimage like any other app using HLOS version of the SBL.

For example to boot from SD card, flash the following image to the SD card:

1) sbl_mmcsd_img_hlos_mcu1_0_release.tiimage renamed as tiboot3.bin

2) tifs.bin

3) combined_opt.appimage renamed as app
