PROCESSOR-SDK-J784S4: Is firmware required for SGMII

Part Number: PROCESSOR-SDK-J784S4

Hi TI I have a quick clarifying question. Is the ethfw firmware specific to the quad port ethernet board? We want to make a direct SGMII connection and verify we do not need firmware for it.

Thanks,
Emily

  • Hi,

. Is the ethfw firmware specific to the quad port ethernet board?

Not exactly, ethfw is firmware for configuration of cpsw9g.

As TI EVM has only support for QSGMII, firmware default configures quad port ethernet support from cpsw9g.

We want to make a direct SGMII connection and verify we do not need firmware for it

What you want to check, if you want to perform data transfer check you have to configure cpsw9g for SGMII, for this you have to make changes in ethfw for sgmii support.

Please refer to ETHFW user guide for more details.

    Best regards,

    Sudheer

  • Thank you Sudheer, is there a section in the user guide that explains how to configure cpsw9g for SGMII? I am not able to find the firmware files in the SDK. Do I need to download something else? I saw in the user guide they were using the RTOS sdk to build ethfw.

  • Hi,

is there a section in the user guide that explains how to configure cpsw9g for SGMII?

For RTOS Application (EthFW) you can refer to EthFW Porting guide from User Guide.

I saw in the user guide they were using the RTOS sdk to build ethfw.

Yes, Default SDK offering from TI has CPSW9G support via RTOS application (EthFw) running on MCU2_0.

If you want Native Linux driver for CPSW9G, you have to enable Native Linux driver for CPSW9G by referring FAQ [How to move to Native Driver], Also you need to update the device tree overlay for SGMII and configure SerDes in SGMII Mode for this. (default QSGMII is enabled, as TI EVM has Quad Enet expansion card with QSGMII support.

    Best Regards,
