OMAPL138B-EP: Is there any pin compatible alternative for OMAPL138 SoC

Part Number: OMAPL138B-EP
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OMAPL138, TMS320C6748, OMAP-L138, SYSBIOS

Hello,

We are using OMAPL138 SoC and we noticed the Linux SDK is no more supported in terms of latest version in Yocto Project. We would like to know if there is latest SoC with DSP C674x Floating -point DSP and ARM Processor for new design to allow us to get latest Linux and still use our current DSP application used on OMAPL138.

Thanks

  • Is there any new generation of ARM processor with tms320c6748 DSP co-processor?

  • Hello, We are now looking into new project and wanted to know if this forum could help us with the following questions, please?

    1. We would like to use SoC which has at least one core of DSP 64-bit and one core of ARM processor. (Currently we are using OMAP-L138 SoC and AM6254 SoC on different projects)
    2. Looking on TI website, there are lots of Keystone II Arch SoC but most of them doesn’t have current Linux SDK or Yocto Project maintained.
    3. Seems like Sitara Processors Linux are development and maintained by TI and Yocto Project, but we couldn’t find a Sitara SoC with DSP 64-bit co-processor.

Would you be able to help us with our requirement please?

  • Dear customer,

I'm wondering for your new generation, is the current OMAPL138 performance is good enough or you're seeking for some upgrade in terms of ARM or DSP?

And trying to get some understanding on the DSP usage - do you want to run your own algorithm in the bare metal? RTOS? Or for any specific AI model implementation?

    B.R.

    Steven.

  • Dear Steven, Thanks for your reply.

We are happy with the OMAPL138 SoC.

Since the support for the Linux in SDK is stopped we want to be able to get latest Linux on SoC.

SO we are looking at some SoC which has similar DSP core, we are using DSP/SYSBIOS (TI_RTOS) and happy with it and all we want is to get ARM core to Linux the one that is supported in SDK.

    Thanks

  • Dear Customer,

Sounds the roadblock today is more about the Linux version we supported on OMAPL138 has some gaps vs your expectation.

The latest version we have for the OMAPL138 SoC Linux is shown as below:

    Version: 06.03.00.106
    Release date: 17 Apr 2020
    kernel version: 4.19.94

What is the target Linux kernel version you'd like to adopt? or any missing feature with the current version?
Or the hidden question of asking for latest Linux version is more about the support concern, given you're planning to use it for new gen, which means need lifecycle another 5-10 years?
    B.R.
    Steven.
  • Dear Steven,

We also have a different project that uses AM6254 SoC and the Linux Kernel version is 5.x

We would like to use this feature.

Sorry forgot to mention, we would like to have multiple core ARM processor like AM6254 + one DSP core. In OMAPL138 we have only one ARM core and one DSP.

    Thanks

  • Dear Steven, yes we are happy with the DSP and ARM SoC. only item we are looking for is to update Linux OS to Kernel Version 6 as this is the current latest in Yocto Project.

This allows just to use latest packages. For example we want to use PHP v7 but the SDK v6 supports PHPv5.

Would it be possible to just build Linux from Yocto Project using Kirkstone branch for OMAPL138 and use it on SoC?
