DM816x : U-boot support for SATA

Hi,

Is there any limitation in uboot to support booting linux kernel from SATA drive and loading filesystem from SATA drive?http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/DM816x_C6A816x_AM389x_PSP_U-Boot

I dont see any mention of uboot able to load linux kernel from SATA drive based on link above. If anyone has tried this and provide instructions/steps, would be much appreciated. I will think this would require uboot to be able to support SATA controller driver of 816x devices and EXT3/VFAT filesystem that stores linux kernel.

Prateek,

Direct boot from SATA is not supported. However, if you want to boot from SATA, it is possible to do so by using a two stage boot; ie, boot the device from a small SPI flash, and the boot code in the SPI flash can init the SATA drive, clocks, DDR etc and boot from the SATA hard disk.

Understood. I am not looking for direct boot support. I am looking for following configuration:

Boot mode: SPI

Uboot is residing in SPI and Linux Kernel/Filesystem residing in SATA drive. Has this configuration been tested? I could not find any SATA support by default in uboot released with 5.02.01.59 SDK.

If it does not exist, what changes would be needed in uboot source code to support the same. Any pointers on this would be much appreciated.

I don't think the support exists for this yet, just that it is possible.

It would help to understand what current state of uboot is and what (if any) changes would it be needed in uboot to support SATA.
