TDA4VM: Backup for smooth power off

Hi TI team,

Currently we are developing a platform to meet SIL-2 requirements. There is a requirement from our customer that there must be a smooth shutdown upon a sudden power interruption. In order to meet this requirement we are planning to have a super cap backup provision for the MCU domain alone.

Can you please let us know the below details.

1. What are the power domains that we need to power to achieve this safety shutdown and whether this can be implemented using the TPS6594 PDN without disturbing the SIL2 requirements.

2. Is there any reference available for this kind of implementation

3. Is there any other option that can be used to achieve the same performance.

1. The TPS6594133A PMIC that supports the J7 PDN-3x universal PDN scheme has the capability to transition the SoC from Full Active to MCU Only mode. This PDN state transition can be executed by either SW I2C writes to specific PMIC registers & bits or via HW circuitry that pulls low the open-drain net MCU_PWRGRP_IRQn connected to PMIC's GPIO8.

Thanks for your reply.

Currently we are planning to use TDA4VM processor and as per the design guidelines below are the PMIC that are suggested to use(rev C PDN user manual of the processor)

TPS65941111RWERQ1 and TPS65941213RWERQ1

Can you please let me know whether the solution that has been mentioned with TPS6594133A-Q1 is validated with TDA4VM and please let me know if there is any schematics available for the same

Hi Sai,

We have poweroff tested with Linux SDK using the above PMIC. It is part of the SDK.

Hi,

I have gone through the manual, but currently i could not find any backup power source(ex: supercap) that could serve the system in times of sudden power removal or failure.

Can you please let me how that can be done.

Are you asking for an option in case the input supply to board is suddenly removed?
