  • Hello Jim,

I actually just finished rewriting the graceful shutdown section for AM64x in my SDK 9.1 draft of the AM64x academy. As of SDK 9.1, AM64x has full support for gracefully shutting down remote cores.

    WHAT IS GOING ON?

SDK 9.1 only supports shutting down a remote core if you can GRACEFULLY shut down the remote core (i.e., remote core puts itself into a "known good state", then sends an ACK. This avoids issues that are caused if Linux just "pulls the plug" without warning). If the Linux remoteproc driver does not receive an ACK, it will timeout after a specified time instead of shutting down the remote core.

    WHERE CAN I LEARN MORE?

What is graceful shutdown, and why does it matter?

AM64x academy > multicore module > How to develop with RPMsg IPC > section "Graceful shutdown"
    https://dev.ti.com/tirex/explore/node?a=7qm9DIS__LATEST&node=A__AT0quqp1AZJ7z5jn1Ua5nQ__AM64-ACADEMY__WI1KRXP__LATEST

Can you help me understand the graceful shutdown code on the remote core side?

In the AM64x MCU+ SDK, refer to examples/drivers/ipc/ipc_rpmsg_echo_linux/ipc_rpmsg_echo.c

I've filed a ticket to add graceful shutdown documentation to the AM64x MCU+ SDK 9.2 docs. In the meantime, you can read the AM62x version of the docs here:

But wait! I wanna see the changes you made to the draft of the AM64x academy for SDK 9.1!

    Sure, here's the big differences:

There are other changes, but they don't impact the goal of understanding graceful shutdown for AM64x.

  • Nick:

Do I assume this change does not affect (or causes a revision of) the image tisdk-default-image-am64xx-evm.wic.xz  (i.e. the SDK LINUX AM64x Yocto - SD card image) or the SDK LINUX RT AM64x Debian Bookworm - SD card image ?

  • The Linux remoteproc driver should behave the same for both Linux & RT kernel, and the yocto and debian flavors of Linux.

    Regards,

    Nick

  • So Nick:

that means in the page Booting Remote Cores ,

    subsection

    "

Let’s use the sysfs interface to load an IPC example onto R5F cluster0-Core0:

    root@am64xx-evm:~# echo stop > /sys/class/remoteproc/remoteproc1/state"

cannot run as is written given the echo stop will not run correctly in SDK v9.1?
  • Fair point. That command will run as written if we assume that the example being stopped is the IPC Echo example, but if there is different code running it might not work. I'll make a note to modify my patch to the documentation.

    Regards,

    Nick
