TDA4AH-Q1: J784S4 evm dfu_util u-boot

Part Number: TDA4AH-Q1

Hi TI Experts,

Can you tell me what needs to be set or configured additionally for the USB gadget driver to be recognized by windows for the  u-boot booting from eg SD card or qspi Nor Flash on j784S4 EVM?

I want to note that booting via USB0 works descripted here:

3.1.1.2. USB Device Firmware Upgrade (DFU) — Processor SDK Linux for J784s4 Documentation

And when u-boot is finally running in this usb boot mode then usb gadget driver is recognized by windows  and dfu-utlis works (eg for dfu and qspi or emmc)

But when the same SPL-Uboot is booted from SD card or QSPI Nor flash the usb gadget driver is not recognized and that dfu-utils not works as descripted in:

3.1.1.7. OSPI/QSPI — Processor SDK Linux for J784s4 Documentation

There is no errors in U-boot - looks like usb  works but windows not recognize it.

SW2  switch 3 and 4 are set eg to ON ON. But looks like  RBL USB boot mode also works for SW2 3-OFF and 4-OFF. Maybe here is something to be set correctly...But looks like in case of RBL USB mode usb0 path is set correctly.

I also try to set CONFIG_DFU_OVER_USB=y in A72 and R5 defconfigs - and  not help .

Lates SPL/uboot version is used from ti-processor-sdk-linux-adas-j784s4-evm-09_01_00_06.

  • Hi Dariusz,

By default all the testing happens on Linux PC. Is there a chance to check on the Linux PC?

    Best Regards,

    Keerthy

  • Hi Keerthy,

Yes, on the Linux PC is the same.

Could you please check on your side?

That means this usb0 and  dfu should works also from u-boot also if system is boot from eg SD card  on j784S4 EVM?

    Regards,

    Dariusz Gasiorowski

  • Hi Dariusz Gasiorowski

USB boot mode (DFU) is different from the SD boot mode. Using DIP switches on the EVM we change between the different boot mode.
Help me understand what is your usecase?
Are you trying to flash to emmc, if yes please go through the app-note for the flashing technique: https://www.ti.com/lit/an/spracy5/spracy5.pdf?ts=1711348931548

  • Hi Diwakar,

    Thank you for question.

Yes, I know that these boot's are different and are control via boot switch. And as I pointed USB boot mode via DFU works from loaded u-boot in this boot mode. And next  expected that usb dfu functionality would work with the same u-boot binary  booted from eg cd-card or qspi flash. Are you suggest that only u-boot loaded via USB Boot mode support DFU tool ? But u-boot loaded via eg SD-card mode not support DFU ? Why, what is a reason ? Looks like in these both boot modes finally on the Target SoC the  USB and DFU  is under u-boot firmware control:

Example u-boot logs in both boot mode after DFU activation in u-boot:

    cdns-usb3-peripheral usb@6000000: DRD version v1 (ID: 0004024e, rev: 00000200)
    cdns-usb3-peripheral usb@6000000: Initialized ep0 support:
cdns-usb3-peripheral usb@6000000: Initialized ep1out support: BULK, INT ISO
cdns-usb3-peripheral usb@6000000: Initialized ep2out support: BULK, INT ISO
cdns-usb3-peripheral usb@6000000: Initialized ep3out support: BULK, INT ISO

    ......

Yes, my intention is flash emmc and qspi via USB and dfu-util tool in both boot modes:

    - USB DFU boot mode - passed

    - QSPI NOR Flash boot mode - failed where  DFU start on u-boot but USB is not enumerate in HOST

What TI-RBL  is doing what can't be done in u-boot to properly enumerate the USB0 ?

  • Hi Dariusz Gasiorowski

You can use the dfu boot mode in SPL using the command mentioned in the app note
    For OSPI:
    for EMMC:
Are these steps not working for you ?

    Diwakar
  • Hi,

    Thanks for quick replay.

These marked steps are working - this is done in USB DFU Boot mode. But as you see in this description :

"These first set of steps are optional if you have u-boot running on the board already"

But, when I start u-boot from eg SD-Card boot mode or QSPI then u-boot is running so I don't need the first step. The u-boot should also works with USB DFU in this case for flashing part (not for booting loading to ram) - and in this case is not working.

  • HI Dariusz

Thanks for reporting this issue we have raised the jira for the same

    https://jira.itg.ti.com/browse/LCPD-37740

For the time being you can make use of dfu boot mode to flash to the emmc device instead of SD boot mode .

  • HI Dariusz

Please apply the patch as suggested in one of the response.

    https://e2e.ti.com/support/processors-group/processors/f/processors-forum/1349676/tda4vh-q1-u-boot-and-dfu-issue/5171798#5171798

and see if DFU is working now.
