SK-AM64B: Queries on Generic bootloader

Part Number: SK-AM64B

Hello Team

  1. I have gone through online material related to boot-up sequence and here are few questions about it:

Is SYSFW required when we are running Linux on A53? Will TI provide an update to this firmware in case of major fixes?

If this firmware is changed in future does it mean we will have to reflash SBL (.tiimage) on the devices?

Can you arrange a session for better understanding bootup sequence in AM64x?

  1. As understood from TI hardware experts, there are three different bootloaders involved while booting Linux on AM64x. What are these three bootloaders for? Can you explain
  • Hi Amey,

Is SYSFW required when we are running Linux on A53? Will TI provide an update to this firmware in case of major fixes?

Yes, SYSFW is required on AM64x devices, regardless the software type running on any of the cores, Linux, FreeRTOS, or other OS.

SYSFW is updated on every Processor SDK or MCU+ SDK release for new features or bug fixes.

If this firmware is changed in future does it mean we will have to reflash SBL (.tiimage) on the devices?

We recommend to update all the software components, including SYSFW, when you are adopting new Processor SDK or MCU+ SDK releases.

By the way, are you planning to use SBL to boot Linux? If so, why not to use U-Boot to boot Linux?

Can you arrange a session for better understanding bootup sequence in AM64x?

Please contact your local TI representative for the request.

As understood from TI hardware experts, there are three different bootloaders involved while booting Linux on AM64x. What are these three bootloaders for? Can you explain

As far as I know, we support two different boot loaders to boot Linux on AM64x, U-Boot and SBL. I am not sure what is the 3rd one.

U-Boot does have 3 boot stages though, which are R5 SPL, A53 SPL, A53 U-Boot. Please see the diagram linked below for the U-Boot boot flow.
