SK-AM64B: PCIE Abnormal logs

Part Number: SK-AM64B

Champs:

Q1.

Do we have the newest Cadence PCIE driver git?

I have browsed this git :

      https://git.ti.com/cgit/ti-linux-kernel/ti-linux-kernel/log/drivers/pci/controller/cadence?h=ti-linux-6.1.y

But it seems has no newest patch.

Q2.

Does the PCI driver we merged into the TI SDK can pass the PCIE certification?

Customer is doing 24 hours or more for the testing robustness.

But they found the PCIE will stuck someone when the PCIE is extreme busy.

Any patch / fix for the Cadence PCIE driver in the AM64 9.01 SDK is welcome.

Q3.

Please see the abnormal log attached.

There are several PCIE abnormal logs:

              A. LINK DOWN!

              B. pci 0000:00:00.0: BAR 0: failed to assign [mem size 0x1000000000 64bit pref]

Those 2 abnormal logs might be related PCIE stuck while doing stress testing.

Please comment for each.

Thanks.

Welcome to Advantech device server EKI series

  • Hello Rio,

Do we have the newest Cadence PCIE driver git?

I have browsed this git :

          https://git.ti.com/cgit/ti-linux-kernel/ti-linux-kernel/log/drivers/pci/controller/cadence?h=ti-linux-6.1.y

But it seems has no newest patch.

The latest development can be found in the upstream/mainline Linux tree at:
    https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commits/master/drivers/pci/controller/cadence
by viewing the History of commits for that directory.

I am not sure I understand what you mean by the "PCI driver" passing the PCIe certification.
If you are referring to the PCIe controller, then yes it has been validated to adhere to the PCIe specification.

The "Link Down" event is abnormal and has not been noticed on AM64x-EVM during automated testing
across multiple SDK releases. Could you please share details of the device connected to the PCIe connector?

    Regards,
    Siddharth.

  • Hi Siddharth:

#1. The customer is doing the automated testing as well (Stress testing to write the Maximum Throughput )

The End point is this PCIE converted to UART.

#2. ==>The "Link Down" event is abnormal and has not been noticed on AM64x-EVM during automated testing
           across multiple SDK releases.

Customer pushing us to resolve this issue, do you have the quick patch for sharing us?

    Thanks.

    BR Rio

  • The End point is this PCIE converted to UART.

Could you share the link to the product? Is it publicly available?

Customer pushing us to resolve this issue, do you have the quick patch for sharing us?

There is no patch for it since this issue hasn't been observed so far.
I am suspecting the endpoint device being used by the customer.
Please provide more details about the device.
Kindly note that hotplug is not supported.
Thus, if the Endpoint device is powered off or the Link is brought down by the Endpoint,
it will not be detected again during the same boot. The fix therefore might require root-causing
the sudden Link Down event from the Endpoint device followed by addressing it.

    Regards,
    Siddharth.

  • Hi Siddharth:

    Some more questions:

When customer is testing the PCIE, the PCIE will stuck somehow. this is 100% reproduce if the IRQ is triggered within very high frequency.

Q1. What's the PCIE IRQ frequency limitation on AM64?

Q2. Do we have the patch and let the customer testing longer than 48 hours without any stuck / errors?

    BR Rio

  • Rio,

The AM64 TRM mentions the following w.r.t. the Link Down event (Link Disconnection):

    12.2.2.4.2.5 PCIe Reset Requirements

Whenever link goes from connected to disconnected state, the PCIe subsystem requires re-initialization based on the events occurring in PCIe core. A request for reset is typically going to be issued and will manifest as a reset request interrupt. Since loopback requires transitions through link connect and disconnect, it will generate reset request interrupts. Typically, issuing the warm reset (module reset for CBA) would be sufficient.

Handling the "reset request interrupt" is not supported in the driver.
Additionally, since hotplug is not supported either, the Link going down will mean
that the endpoint device will not be functional anymore in the same boot.

Please apply the following diff and share the logs corresponding to it:

    the PCIE will stuck somehow.

Is it the same as the PCIe endpoint device no longer working
    or does Linux crash/hang?

    Regards,
    Siddharth.

  • Hi Siddharth:

Thanks for fast replying the patch, appreciated.

#1. The Linux is still running, but the PCIE is not working at all due to the Interrupt count is not increasing.

    #2. Some questions:

Q1. Is there any tool for monitoring the PCIE is running on AM64 end? (I know there is a scope, but we need the script / command to check the PCIE.

Q2. AM64 DS shows the PCIE is Gen2 and 5Gbps / per lane.

This is the customer End point PCIE card: which is only 2.5G bps.

It's very strange the 2.5G end points will make the AM64 5G controller stucks.

    Any thought?

  • Is there any tool for monitoring the PCIE is running on AM64 end

By "running", do you mean to ask if the PCIe controller is still powered-on? If so, you could try reading the device-id/vendor-id register at:
    0x0d000000
If you are able to read it, then the peripheral is still powered-on. If not it will result in a Bus Abort.
Once you have ensured that it is powered-on, you could read other registers to determine its status.

AM64 DS shows the PCIE is Gen2 and 5Gbps / per lane.

This is the customer End point PCIE card: which is only 2.5G bps.

It's very strange the 2.5G end points will make the AM64 5G controller stucks.

I doubt that it has anything to do with the data rate. The overview of the UART device shows that
Max Data Rate (Mbps) is 31.25, which is very low. So the bottleneck will be at the UART device
which could be non-responsive. If the Link is up when PCIe is non-responsive, and you have ensured
that the AM64 PCIe controller is powered-on as described earlier, you could run the following command:
    lspci -vvv
to view the status of the UART Endpoint device. You could try accessing the internal registers of the
Endpoint device as well to see if it has experienced any errors due to which it is non-functional.

Does the Link go down when PCIe is non-responsive? If the Link has gone down, then as I have mentioned before, the Endpoint device will no longer be functional. However, if you are sure that the Link is still up, then you could try checking the registers for PCIe Errors such as:
    PCIE0_I_UNCORR_ERR_STATUS 0x0d000104
    PCIE0_I_CORR_ERR_STATUS 0x0d000110

  • Rio,

The Linux device driver for the XR17V358 PCIe UART device is:
    drivers/tty/serial/8250/8250_exar.c
You could try updating the driver to the latest one at:
    https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commits/master/drivers/tty/serial/8250/8250_exar.c
and check if the issue gets resolved. There seem to be a few Fixes in the driver as well
which might not be present in the customer's Linux source for the PCIe UART driver.
In particular, the following Fix might be applicable:
    github.com/.../73b5a5c00be39e23b194bad10e1ea8bb73eee176

    Regards,
    Siddharth.

  • Hi Siddharth:

Thanks for your fruitful info, we will study then.

  • Hi Siddharth:

       Update the status:

#1. The customer reported the issue still remains.

#2. Customer refused to patch the PCIM card  as the below replied.

We know there are new xr17v358 driver in newer kernel.

However, the new driver is based on 8250, which is lack of key feature we need, it's also can't pass our stress test

#3. Please review my patched file. I tried the interrupt count in the printk dump, so, it will be easy to read the PCIE Interrupt.

#4. Please see the attached log. (Case A only)

                Here is how to perform:

Case A: Start PCIE - UART TX/RX testing, then Press "Ctrl +C" to cancel it.

They used this PCIE - UART card for more than 10 years.

In their old product, there is no issue when doing this testing.

Case B: Regular UART TX/RX testing for 1 week.

They expect no issue while doing this. (We are still checking the log.)

    Any thought?

  • #2. Customer refused to patch the PCIM card  as the below replied.

We cannot rule out the issue with the PCIM card or the driver if they refused to patch it.

#4. Please see the attached log. (Case A only)

I notice the "Link down" error. Is the PCIM card functional?

Start PCIE - UART TX/RX testing, then Press "Ctrl +C" to cancel it.

If the test runs to completion, does it report that the PCIM card is functional?
Can we make sure that "Ctrl+C" is handled properly by the test script as well as the PCIM driver that the customer is using?

    Regards,
    Siddharth.

  • Hi Siddharth:

-->I notice the "Link down" error. Is the PCIM card functional? (Rio: Yes, PCIE is functional.)

-->does it report that the PCIM card is functional?
Can we make sure that "Ctrl+C" is handled properly by the test script as well as the PCIM driver that the customer is using?

(Rio: It seems you and me want to review their testing script.

    Let's discuss in off-line email.

    Thanks.
