TDA4VE-Q1: DSI cannot output with UART3 (AB26 & AD28)

Part Number: TDA4VE-Q1

Hi Expert,

We use J721S2 and PSDK8.4,

Currently our target board can display via DSI, And originally the AB26 & AD28 pin are configured to I2C.

After configuring AB26 & AD28 to the UART of A72 Linux, the user application access the UART linux device normally, but the DSI doesn't work well.

Are there any additional settings or any restrictions for this usecase ??

Regards,
Eten

  • Hi Eten,

DSI displays have a I2C interface that could be used for initializing DSI controller and touch. Below schematic is an example of the connection from TI's common processor board.

Most likely there is a resource conflict between UART and DSI on your board, so you would have to use different pins for either UART or DSI.

    Regards,

    Takuma

  • Hi Takuma,

Because our target board is connected another MCU to control DSI output panel, we don't need this I2C pins of DSI.

Is there a way to modify the DSI driver to disable the I2C control and then adjust the use of these pins, AB26 & AD28, from I2C to UART ?

    Thank you !!

    Regards,
    Eten

  • Hi Eten,

If the DSI panel is connected to a different MCU and not to the TDA4VE, then changing pins on TDA4VE-side should not affect DSI behavior on the separate MCU.

Can you confirm whether on your schematic that DSI panel has no connections to TDA4VE?

    Regards,

    Takuma

  • Hi Takuma,

The external MCU is connected to TDA4VE via the UART3 (AB26 & AD28) to control the DSI pannel.

TDA4VE is responsible for transmitting video data through DSI.

    Regards,
    Eten

  • Hi Eten,

Are AB26 and AD28 connected to DSI panel in anyway?

If they are not connected, which I2C pins are connected to DSI instead of AB26 and AD28?

    Regards,

    Takuma

  • Hi Takuma,

The following is the simple diagram.

    Regards,
    Eten

  • Hi Eten,

Ah, I see. Thank you for the diagram. That clears up my misunderstandings.

Could you share dmesg logs for when the AB26 and AD28 pins are configured for I2C and DSI is functional? Additionally, could you share logs for when AB26 and AD28 pins are configured for UART and DSI is nonfunctional?

    Regards,

    Takuma

    Regards,
    Eten

  • Hi Eten,

Comparing the logs, it seems there are no outstanding errors that are unique to pinmuxing for either UART or I2C. Two questions:

    • What is the output from "kmsprint" when pinmuxing for UART? Do you see any difference in kmsprint logs when compared to the kmsprint logs from pinmuxing to I2C?
    • Could you share device tree for when pinmuxed to UART and pinmuxed to I2C?

J721E, which is a similar platform to J721S2, has a board that has a DSI interface, and their device tree overlay for enabling that display can be found here:

    https://github.com/beagleboard/BeagleBoard-DeviceTrees/blob/5973f30e9acf4e35606c6c39fcd539984e3556c5/src/arm64/overlays/k3-j721e-beagleboneai64-RPi-7inch-panel.dts#L82

I am expecting there to be some driver that configures your touchscreen through I2C, similar to many off-the-shelf DSI touchscreen as the one used by Beagle. So...

    • I suspect that the touchscreen driver had some ties to the I2C interface and disabling the I2C node caused the software to not initialize properly (software issue),
    • or there was actually a physical connection between the TDA4VE and DSI I2C interface (hardware issue)

It seems strange that only I2C signals are routed to external MCU, since most DSI interfaces are connected via ribbon cable where all of the signals are sent to a single device. Unless, this was an intentional design choice and the MCU is running some sort of driver to configure DSI display through I2C.

    Another question,

When enabling 2nd DSI driver, do you have the patch file for the module "psdk_rtos/vision_apps/utils/dss" ?

    Regards,
    Eten

  • Hi Eten,

For device tree, please only pinmux UART or I2C. I am not sure which will overwrite the other, but one pinmux will overwrite the other pinmux if the shared device tree is used as-is.

As for 2nd DSI driver, I assumed the Linux driver was being used for display, but could you clarify what/why patch is desired for the RTOS SDK instead of the Linux SDK?

    Regards,

    Takuma

  • Hi Takuma,

On the Linux side, we have checked the device tree and found nothing incorrect.  So we suspect that something needs to be modified on the RTOS side. ( MCU2_0 is responsible for DSI driver )

In addition of to modifying the "J721S2_pinmux_data.c" of pdk package to disable I2C (AB26 & AD28), do any files need to be modified ?

    As for 2nd DSI driver,

Sorry, I forgot to mention that we got a patch file to enable 2nd DSI driver by the following post.

    https://e2e.ti.com/support/processors-group/processors/f/processors-forum/1216922/tda4ve-q1-support-two-ch-from-dsi-output-on-j721s2/4723808?tisearch=e2e-sitesearch&keymatch=2nd%2520DSI%2520joe#4723808

So we needs the corresponding dss utils module patch to enable the 2nd DSI.

    Thank you !!

    Regards,
    Eten

                J721S2_IOPAD(0x0c8, PIN_INPUT_PULLUP, 13) /* (AD28) EXT_REFCLK1.I2C1_SDA */
            >;
        };

Please remove main_uart3_pins_default or main_i2c1_pins_default. These both are changing registers at the same offset with different values of 14 or 13, so this will cause a resource conflict (aka, in the end, the register will either have UART or I2C, but not both as one will overwrite the other).

For the 2nd DSI driver, let me loop in Brijesh to see if he has some context.

    Takuma

  • Hi Eten,

Are you trying to enable second DSI instance in the Linux? Which patch are you using?

    Regards,

    Brijesh

  • Hi Takuma,

We have removed the main_i2c1_pins_default element.

Unfortunately the DSI output still doesn't work.

    Regards,
    Eten

  • Hi Brijesh,

We are trying to enabled 2nd DSI instance in the FreeRTOS (MCU2_0).

    Regards,
    Eten

  • Hi Eten,

But i think it is not yet supported in Linux or RTOS. so wondering how you are enabling second instance. Have you added support for it in the driver?

    Regards,

    Brijesh

  • Hi Brjesh,

Oh !! My former colleagues adjusted the register settings of 2nd DSI driver according to the datasheet.

    Regards,
    Eten

  • Hi Eten,

Its not yet supported officially in the SDK, so will not be able to help much.

    Regards,

    Brijesh

  • Hi Brijesh,

    It's okay !!

Can you provide a plan or date for the formal released SDK that provides the 2nd DSI output ?

    Thank you !!

    Regards,
    Eten

  • Hi Eter,

The request is in the system, but the planning is not yet done and so planned date is not yet available. The main limitation is, its not possible to validated it on EVM.

    Regards,

    Brijesh

  • Hi Brijesh,

Because our target board has two DSI outputs,  we can do the validation after you complete the patch.

    Regards,
    Eten

  • Hi Eten,

But are you using Linux or RTOS based display?

    Regards,

    Brijesh

  • Hi Brijesh,

We are using the RTOS based display !!

    Regards,
    Eten

  • Hi Eten,

ok, let me check with the dev team.

    Regards,

    Brijesh

  • Hi Takuma,

Finally I fixed this issue caused by our incorrect settings.

    Thank you !!

    Regards,
    Eten

  • Hi Brijesh,

How it the progress of 2nd DSI output ?

    Regards,
    Eten

  • Hi Eten,

I still have not got the chance to check it with the team.

    Regards,

    Brijesh
