AM625-Q1: Porting UBOOT to custom hardware

Part Number: AM625-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM620

I was advised to follow the instructions from the following link:

https://dev.ti.com/tirex/explore/node?node=A__AWde9U3fyhQwPQrzBeP7QA__AM62-ACADEMY__uiYMDcq__LATEST

to port your "tisdk-default-image-am62xx-lp-evm.wic.xz" image to our custom hardware.  I first wanted to see if I could build u-boot (using the downloaded SDK) with the following procedure:

Build U-Boot (ti.com)

and boot from the modified SD card on the development board (before trying our custom hardware).

Unfortunately, copying the files to the existing SD image did not result in a successful boot from the SD card (on the dev board).  Also, I could not build u-boot using the u-boot top level make file:

I had no issue building u-boot with the SDK top level make file, however.

  • I'd recommend
    - build u-boot using the SDK top level makefile via <make u-boot> from the SDK installation folder.
    - run your u-boot build binary on TI reference board.
    Best,
    -Hong

  • Hong,

I've attached the boot output from the modified "k3-am625-hello-world.dts" using the dtb file built using it.

When I first tried building the dtb file within SDK (ti-processor-sdk-linux-am62xx-evm-09.02.01.09), I didn't have the "tisdk_am62x_evm_defconfig" file so I changed the name of the "defconfig" file in the SDK folder to complete the build.

The image I have on the dev board is "tisdk-default-image-am62xx-lp-evm.wic.xz"

What we'd like to have on the first "port" is USB, two ethernet ports operational an UART for COM.

I'm following the instructions located at this link:

    Linux Board Port (ti.com)

  • I found part of the issue.

  • Hong,

Is it possible to boot from USB (using a USB to micro SD adapter)?  The TI data sheets seem to indicate that it's an option.  If so, can you verify the dip switch settings.  I'm not sure it's supported on the dev board but I might have a use for the information on our custom hardware.

On the dev board, I simply set the dip switches for boot mode and that was all that was necessary (for the micro SD option).

         Thanks!

  • From my knowledge, USB host boot might not fully work out-of-box in SDK on TI reference board.
Have you tried booting from SD with your u-boot build on TI board?
    Best,
    -Hong

  • Hong,

Can you provide me with the defconfig file used to build the "tisdk-default-image-am62xx-lp-evm.wic.xz" image?  In the "ti-processor-sdk-linux-am62xx-evm-09.02.01.09" SDK there is only a deconfig file (default, I assume)

  • Hong,

OK!  I've been navigating through most of what you sent me but where can I find the "am62x_lpsk_r5_defconfig am62x_lpsk_a53_defconfig" file (any of the others listed)?  As I mentioned there seems to be only a generic defconfig file called "defconfig" in the config folder of the SDK.

  • All u-boot defconfig files are under u-boot src tree folder "configs"
    https://git.ti.com/cgit/ti-u-boot/ti-u-boot/tree/configs?h=09.02.00.010
    Best,
    -Hong

  • Hong,

         OK!  Thanks!

  • As noted in my reply, one of options to try first is building u-boot with the top level makefile, and booting your u-boot build binary on TI reference board.
"make u-boot" from the SDK installation folder.
    Best,
    -Hong

  • Hong,

OK!  I have an additional question...  We have a custom board that we should have the ability to boot via an SD card.  I'm sure the Am620 - Q1 was placed on the board out of the box.  Can we reasonable assume we should be able to boot from an SD card (with the DIP switches set appropriately) or do we need to do additional set up?

  • Hong,

What information about the boot security is available from the part number (AM6204ASGFHIAMCRQ1)?  We are still unable to boot from the SD card and your documentation suggests an (HS-FS) image cannot be boot to GP hardware.  The development board we’re using is an HS-FS configuration.  Apparently, there is only one other configuration (HS-SE).  Is there anything in the part number that would indicate whether it is HS-FS or HS-SE or is the only incompatibility between (HS - *) and GP.

Also, when I hook up my debugger to our custom board, I get the following error:

  • Hong,

By the way, the external JTAG debugger works on the development board.

  • I'd recommend to post any new inquiry to a new e2e to help future reference and tracking.
    Best,
    -Hong
