Video capture from CAM/ISS interface on DM814x EVM

Hi,

I am trying to figure out the best way to capture images from a 5MP LI-5M03 camera module from Leopard Imaging on my DM814x EVM. I need to capture the complete 5MP image (not any of the HD formats)

The EVM is running the Linux from EZSDK 5_02_02_60 so I was assuming that it would be possible to capture images and video using the V4L2 interface, but when I try to open "/dev/video" it fail since the device driver is not installed.

The images I am capturing have to be JPEG compressed afterwards before being used in the rest of the system.

So my questions are:

1) Is the best way to capture images from the Parallel Camera Interface using the V4L2 interface?

2) How do I install the /dev/video drivers?

3) How do I take the full 5MP image and JPEG encode it (by the DSP core)?

Best regards,

Karsten

  • Hi,

Currently V4L2 capture driver is not supported on DM8148. It will be supported in Q411.

  • Hi Hardik,

If the V4L2 capture interface is not available yet, how would you then recommend to acquire images from the CAM/ISS interface? Does any of the other technologies available work with the parallel camera interface?

    PS:

I noticed that an Aptina (Micron) V4L2 sensor-level driver for the MT9P031 5MP sensor is available for the Beagle Board. Would this driver be able to be ported to the current EZSDK 5.02.02.60?

    Best regards,

  • Hi,

V4L2 for HDVPSS VIP capture is planned in Q411. But we dont have plan for ISS V4L2 as of now. We have open max framework available for ISS capture. You can contact your local TI representative for getting same. It may have some NDA/Licensing agreement requrirement.

  • Hi,

Does the OpenMAX framework capture support "non-HD" resolutions on the ISS? I plan to use a 5 megapixel camera attached to the CAM interface so I will need to be able to capture "raw" input data from the sensor that is _not_ 1080P or 720P or similar.

And how do I configure the OpenMAX for capturing on the ISS interface? Would it be possible to get the capture_encode sample to work with the ISS capture?

I will also need to JPEG encode the captured images. Does the OpenMAX support a JPEG encoder that runs on the DSP on the DM814x?

    Best regards,

    Karsten

  • There is no plan for supporting ISS or the JPEG encoder via the OpenMax interface in the EZSDK. There is an IP Net Camera Reference Design Kit available which exposes the SW interface for exercising the ISS. Please contact your TI representative for more details on this.

  • Hi Karsten,

The ISS IP supports non-HD resolutions and up-to 20M thus implementing 5M capture is possible from the parallel port.

However, neither open-max nor ip net camera software or native APIs support 5M capture. Both of these software packages come with the ISS HAL layer driver (hardware abstraction layer) which can be built upon to configure a 5M capture application.

JPEG encoding is supported by simcop and hdvicp. I know that simcop based jpeg encoder can do 5M encode but need to check on the hdvicp encoder.

HDVICP2 JPEG Encode Datasheet says "Supports all resolutions ranging from 32x32 to 4320x4096".

Which means it can support up to 16MP.

  • Hardik,

Does it mean that now the only choice that we have is to use Video Input Ports for capturing Video  from the CMOS camera  either through CCIR656 or 601 interface or standard VGA interface. There is no  way we can do all this with ISS V4l2 drivers. Now  if I have misunderstood anything also can you clarify, is the ISS interface for still photography or is it for video  as well.

Is there any way that camera ISS interface can be used with inbuilt drivers for further image processing on the DSP and driver can be used to get that info.
