DM6467T EVM 12-Bit Mux

Regarding the Spectrum Digital's DM6467T evaluation module reference design.  Does anyone have any insight as to why Spectrum Digital chose to power their 12-Bit 1 of 3 Mux's (P/N SN74CBT16214) from a 4.1V voltage reference instead of directly from 5V?  I understand the Mux can operate down to a 4V input, but it is not clear why they chose to run this part at 4.1V given the input and corresponding outputs are 3.3V signals.  Any insight into this would be appreciated as currently this mux is the only 5V part used in my design and I would like to know my options regarding powering this device.

  • Following is the resposne from Spectrum Digital:

    It was operated at 4.1 Volts as this is a stand CBT switch so operating at 4.1 makes sure the level translation is 3.3 Volt compatible.

     

    On the further note it could probably be operated at 5 Volts if the input to output voltage stays at the 3.3V levels through the switch, often times there is a voltage drop on the signals due to level translation effects on older CBT devices.  It would be fairly easy for him to run an experiment or look  closer in the data sheet at what the pass voltage is through the switch.

     

     

    There may be newer CBTL switches or other similar switches or different switches or muxes that now operate at 3.3V levels that were not available when this board was first designed.
