AM6412: AM64 Reference board using SD card as primary boot and emmc as backup boot

Part Number: AM6412

Tool/software:

Hello,

I am working with an AM6412 based board  and attempting to configure it to use an SD card as the primary boot device and eMMC as the backup boot device. Here are the boot parameters I am using:

  • primary_boot_mode {3,4,5,6} = {0,0,0,1}
  • primary_boot_mode_config {7,8,9} = {0,0,1}
  • backup_boot_mode {10,11,12} = {1,0,1}
  • backup_boot_mode_config {13} = {0}

My questions are:

  1. Does the AM64 support this boot mode configuration?
  2. If supported, does the eMMC operate in filesystem mode or RAW mode?

I have attempted to configure the eMMC in filesystem mode by formatting it with a FAT32 filesystem and copying the TI firmware files (tiboot3.bin, tispl.bin, and u-boot.img). However, I encounter the following error in U-Boot:

Can someone help me to understand whats going on....

  • Hello,

    Does the AM64 support this boot mode configuration?

    Yes, the ROM does support that bootmode configuration.

    If supported, does the eMMC operate in filesystem mode or RAW mode?

    The ROM only supports FS mode in eMMC backup boot.

    Can someone help me to understand whats going on....

    You said you are configuring to boot from eMMC FS but the logs indicate the U-Boot is trying to boot further images from SD card. Could you please clarify what media you are really booting from?

    Regards,

    Prashant

  • Hi Prashant,

    Sorry for the late reply. To answer your question, in our board-specific code...[board/tirefboard/am64x/cb.c]

    We configured the board to boot from the SD card first and try the eMMC second.

    void board_boot_order(u32 *spl_boot_list)
    {
    	spl_boot_list[0] = BOOT_DEVICE_MMC2;
    	spl_boot_list[1] = BOOT_DEVICE_MMC1;
    }

    Therefore, I'm assuming it tried the SD card first. Since no SD card was present, it attempted to load the image from the eMMC.

    I have partially solved the above issue, as the R5-specific DTS file doesn't have the eMMC configuration.

    Here is the latest log on this issue: now tispl.bin is trying to load u-boot.img, but it fails.

  • Hello,

    Can you once try booting from eMMC alone? This is to see if the issue is originating specifically from the U-Boot first trying to boot from SD card and then eMMC.
