dm816x H264 platinum codec quality

Are there any quality measurements (psnr, bandwidth,...) about the TI H264 platinum codec which is used in the dm816x? Are there any comparisions to other H264 codecs like MainConcept?

Is the TI H264 platinum codec suitable for high bandwidth tv broadcast situations or is it mainly designed to be used in surveillance applications which require lower quality than broadcast situations?

  • Hi,

TI provides codec on its different platforms of Davinci class (DM6467, DM36x, DM81xx) etc...
For all of them TI provides encoders (H.264, H.263, MPEG4) for consumer class applications...
Lot of consumer class products are available based upon these codecs  - mainly on DM6467 and DM36x - so it should help you to asses the video quality.
For Dm816x - as of now you might not find products available but the quality is better than our previous generation platfroms.
The PSNR is almost same (less than 0.4 db away) as ref encoders  - like JM and X264....

Rgearding broadcast applications - the same codecs can be used with high quality settings.... Also on DM816x - TI has plans of developing a broadcast specific H.264 encoder..

    Thanks,
    With Regards,
    Pramod
