AM625: Yocto Linux Image doesn't works in eMMC of AM625 EVM

Part Number: AM625

Tool/software:

Hello Ti experts,

I've successfully built an wic image of Yocto Linux Image for Ti's AM625 by using this link: Link
Now I'm into a problem that the .wic.xz generated from Yocto build works with the SD card on AM625 EVM.
But when I create an .ext4 using the contents from .wic.xz of Yocto generated Linux Image and flash the created .ext4 on EVM the board isn't booting properly, it's booting in emergency mode
I've attached the logs below:

=> boot
switch to partitions #0, OK
mmc0(part 0) is current device
SD/MMC found on device 0
Failed to load 'boot.scr'
Can't set block device

Now, my questions are
1. what is difference between the .wic.xz provided by Ti i.e. Image provided on link: Link and the .wic.xz Image generated by me using the Yocto build?
2. What are changes required to be done in the .wic.xz generated from Yocto build so that I can flash it to eMMC and boot directly?

Thanks & Regards,
Aditya T

  • Hello Ti experts,

Is anyone going to answer to this thread?

    Kind Regards,

  • Hi Aditya,

looks like perhaps your eMMC is missing critical system folders like /proc, /sys, /dev, and /tmp so the Kernel can't mount the respective sysfs nodes.

Try to program your eMMC using the rootfs tarball, rather than copying files from the WIC image, see the steps here (skip ahead to the "The following instructions can be used to prepare the <your_rootfs.ext4> using tisdk-base-image-am62xx-evm.tar.xz:" section): https://e2e.ti.com/support/processors-group/processors/f/processors-forum/1127618/faq-sk-am62-how-to-flash-emmc-using-usb-dfu-on-am62x-sk-e2

If you inspect one of the Yocto-generated rootfs tarballs (example below) you'll see how it contains empty directories for those Kernel mountpoints, and extracting said tarballs will create those on the eMMC.

    $ tar -tvf tisdk-tiny-image-am62xx-evm.tar.xz | grep '\/sys\/'

  • Hello,

Try to program your eMMC using the rootfs tarball, rather than copying files from the WIC image, see the steps here (skip ahead to the "The following instructions can be used to prepare the <your_rootfs.ext4> using tisdk-base-image-am62xx-evm.tar.xz:" section): https://e2e.ti.com/support/processors-group/processors/f/processors-forum/1127618/faq-sk-am62-how-to-flash-emmc-using-usb-dfu-on-am62x-sk-e2

I followed all the steps mentioned here and created an ext4 file out of tar.xz file. But, still the device enters in emergency mode. I've shared logs for the same

Also attached output for command "journalctl -xb" in file below
    journalctl_logs.txt

Please update regarding it as soon as possible

If you inspect one of the Yocto-generated rootfs tarballs (example below) you'll see how it contains empty directories for those Kernel mountpoints, and extracting said tarballs will create those on the eMMC.

Yes the empty directories are present on my system also, checked it.

Also I need to ask is why to use data for filesystem from .tar.xz and not from root partition of SD card, which is flashed from .wic.xz generated?
Because in my case, the ext4 created using any of the way is containing the directories /proc, /sys, /dev, and /tmp so the Kernel can mount the respective sysfs nodes, but still kernel goes into emergency mode.

Do I need to do yocto build again?

    Thanks & Regards,
    Aditya T

  • Hello,

Is there any update on this query?

    Kind Regards,

    Aditya T

  • Hello ,

Is there any update on this issue?

    Kind Regards,
    Aditya T

  • Is anyone going to answer this query?

this is an very important issue to resolve or my custom board will not go into production

  • Also I need to ask is why to use data for filesystem from .tar.xz and not from root partition of SD card, which is flashed from .wic.xz generated?
Because in my case, the ext4 created using any of the way is containing the directories /proc, /sys, /dev, and /tmp so the Kernel can mount the respective sysfs nodes, but still kernel goes into emergency mode.

It's not just about the presence of those folders but there could also be specific permission related issues. Perhaps also files/folders are missing

Programming the rootfs from a Yocto-generated tarball is a known-good method to program the rootfs, so we should try to re-create this and use this as a known-good baseline.

Can you program your eMMC using...

    1) The TI-provided rootfs tarball, and

    2) Your own Yocto-generated rootfs tarball

...to see if either or both those methods work?
    (they should)

Then, if you must use your own process/method, you can then compare the filesystems side by side in detail what is different between your working and non-working SD cards and their respective file systems.

    Regards, Andreas

  • Hello,

    1) The TI-provided rootfs tarball, and

Yes, using Ti-provided rootfs it is possible to boot in eMMC.

    2) Your own Yocto-generated rootfs tarball

No, in this case the kernel enters into emergency mode

Then, if you must use your own process/method, you can then compare the filesystems side by side in detail what is different between your working and non-working SD cards and their respective file systems.

The both Ti provided as well as Yocto image works fine wit the SD card, but the Yocto built one is failing when I flash the rootfs into eMMC, The image fails to boot even in EVK

    Best Regards,
    Aditya T

  • Hi Aditya.

but the Yocto built one is failing when I flash the rootfs into eMMC

How did you Yocto-build this failing rootfs tarball (detailed steps). I would like to understand what exactly you did there.

    Thanks, Andreas

  • Well, I did followed the steps provided in manual only

    The manual link: linkhttps://software-dl.ti.com/processor-sdk-linux/esd/AM62X/09_02_01_10/exports/docs/linux/Overview_Building_the_SDK.html

Also I was getting some errors in building a Yocto Image, the query link which helped me completing my build is: https://e2e.ti.com/support/processors-group/processors/f/processors-forum/1336065/am625-errors-in-building-yocto-kirkstone-linux-for-custom-am625-som

This is it, I've followed these steps and solved the errors came across.

    Kind Regards,

    Aditya T

  • Hi Aditya,

This is it, I've followed these steps and solved the errors came across.

So you no longer have this issue; and we can close this support case?

Can you please let me know if there's some specific issue/mistake in the documentation? If something needs improvement I want to provide feedback to the respective team.

    Thanks, Andreas

  • So you no longer have this issue; and we can close this support case?

I can build the Yocto Image successfully, but the Image built isn't working into eMMC. That's my issue

Can you please let me know if there's some specific issue/mistake in the documentation? If something needs improvement I want to provide feedback to the respective team.

No, there ain't any mistake in documentation, if followed the documentation anyone can built their own yocto Image

    Kind Regards,

    Aditya T
