AM6412: Enabling Yocto's 'externalsrc'

Part Number: AM6412

Tool/software:

Hi,

I cloned our kernel repo beside our Yocto project (based on the Linux SDK 9.). I want to experiment with some kernel changes without adding/committing changes to the kernel repo. Yocto's 'externalsrc' feature seems like a good fit, see docs.yoctoproject.org/singleindex.html

When adding the following to the kernel's .bb recipe:

    inherit externalsrc
   EXTERNALSRC = "/home/lee/work/git/linux-kernel"

This works as expected. To verify, I introduced an error in a kernel source file (in the referenced kernel clone) and confirmed the Yocto build failed for the expected reason.

However, if I instead add the following to my configs/local.conf:

    INHERIT += "externalsrc"
    EXTERNALSRC_pn-linux-ti-staging = "/home/lee/work/git/linux-kernel"
    # Also tried:
    #EXTERNALSRC:pn-linux-ti-staging = "/home/lee/work/git/linux-kernel"
    #EXTERNALSRC:linux-ti-staging = "/home/lee/work/git/linux-kernel"

This didn't work as expected, continuing to fetch and unpack the kernel from our Github server, as if the changes were ignored.

Making the changes in the local.conf seems more appropriate and is hence preferred. Is this frequently used for development? Are there any known issues? Are there any other syntax variations I can try?

Thanks,

Lee
