AM625: AM6254- stuck while booting from SD card

Part Number: AM625
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BEAGL-PLAY-SBC

Tool/software:

Hello,

I was trying to boot the AM6254 processor with SD card as I removed the EMMC permanently. The board I am refering to the beagleplay board as mentioned in thread AM6254 issue with the power up sequence using TPS6521903RHBR.

I select the boot process from SD card while selecting the bootmode as 3-SD Card Debug, the Image I flashed is of beagleplay available on their website https://www.beagleboard.org/distros/beagleplay-debian-12-6-2024-07-04-xfce.

the error is coming out this,

Gave up waiting for root file system device. Common problems:
- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
- Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/mmcblk1p3 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!
(initramfs)

I got this while having the console from UART debug pins,

Thanks

Mohit Sharma

    Hello Mohit,

First, to set support expectations: TI does not design the beaglebone boards, or release the beaglebone software. • Hello Nick,

I will be using a BEAGL-PLAY-SBC(https://www.ti.com/tool/BEAGL-PLAY-SBC) as a reference as my board is a copy of it.

I will be attaching the full log of my SBC please review it.

Additionally, I have removed the EMMC and booting the board from SD card by pressing the USR button on beagleplay.

    Thanks and Regards

  • Hello Mohit,

I am not sure what to make of your terminal output. I am passing your thread to a team member more familiar with Debian. Feel free to ping the thread if you do not get a response within a couple of business days.

    Regards,

    Nick

  • Hi Mohit,

While I went through your previous e2e thread and this one, I understand you copied the BeaglePlay design but had power problem on eMMC, so now the eMMC device is removed from your board.

As Nick said, we only provide support based on TI Processor SDK, won't be able to support the open source community software. But from the console log you provided, I think this is what happens:

The log line 106: ALERT!  /dev/mmcblk1p3 does not exist.  Dropping to a shell!

    and log line 63: append: root=/dev/mmcblk1p3 ro rootfstype=ext4 resume=/dev/mmcblk1p2 rootwait net.ifnames=0 quiet

This configures the root filesystem on the SD card (/dev/mmcblk1). However now since the eMMC is removed, the SD card device name is no longer "/dev/mmcblk1", it should be "/dev/mmcblk0" now. Then Linux is unable to find and mount the root filesystem.

I don't use the open source software on BeaglePlay, but I think this is how to resolve the issue:

If you attach the SD card to a PC (Linux PC is preferred), the SD card first partition should have a file called /extlinux/extlinux.conf.

Open this file, it should have a line as below (or similar).

        APPEND root=/dev/mmcblk1p3 ro rootfstype=ext4 resume=/dev/mmcblk1p2

Modify the word "mmcblk1" to "mmcblk0" (change "1" to "0") in all instances. Then save the file and try to boot it on your board to see if it resolves the problem.

  • Hi Bin Liu,

thanks for the feedback will try this.

Additionally just wanted to provide you some information that when it drops to the shell at (initramfs) I have tried multiple things like

(initramfs) ls /dev/mmc*,   but i am not able to see the directory related to this and when I tried

(initramfs) ls /dev,     there is no content related to the mmcblk

(initramfs) mmc info, no directory found

When I tried to boot the beagleplay without pressing boot button it shows me the AM62xDFU maybe because there is no emmc on board.

Please let me know if you have some OS image to flash with SD card only on Beagleplay board.

    thanks & Regards

    Mohit

  • Hi Mohit,

(initramfs) ls /dev/mmc*,   but i am not able to see the directory related to this and when I tried

(initramfs) ls /dev,     there is no content related to the mmcblk

(initramfs) mmc info, no directory found

Typically initramfs is very minimal, it doesn't provide kernel drivers to enable most peripherals. So it is normal that you don't see mmcblk nodes here.

When I tried to boot the beagleplay without pressing boot button it shows me the AM62xDFU maybe because there is no emmc on board.

I guess so, it is up to how the board bootmode is configured.

Please let me know if you have some OS image to flash with SD card only on Beagleplay board.

Let's do the extlinux.conf fix first, since it is a simple step. If it doesn't fix the boot issue, I will point you to the TI Processor SDK.

  • hi Bin Liu,

I tested by modifying the extlinux.config file but the output remains same. I will be attaching the extlinux.comfig file and the current log after modifying.

Gave up waiting for root file system device. Common problems:

     - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)

       - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)

     - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)

ALERT! /dev/mmcblk0p3 does not exist. Drop^[x to a shell!

  • Hi Mohit,

The last SD card debug log (SD_debug.txt) shows the SD card is not detected and not enumerated.

Can please provide the same SD card debug from the unmodified BeaglePlay board for comparison?

  • Hi Bin,

Below attached is the log for the original beagleplay unmodified.

    SD_log_beagleplay.txt

    Thanks

    Mohit

  • Hi Bin, I got an update its due to RTC I2C lines was not connected with the PMIC which causing the SD card not to detect.
