BOOTING C5510 FROM COMPACT FLASH

Hi all,

I want to boot C5510 from Compact Flash. Can CFlash be used as a booting memory?

Posted a similar thread below which has similar info

http://e2e.ti.com/support/dsp/tms320c5000_power-efficient_dsps/f/109/p/114653/504811.aspx#504811

Presently we are using DOC as external memory for C5510 and the DSP was booting from DOC.

Now we want to replace the DOC with Compact Flash.
Had a few queries about the same -

1. Is it possible to use the Compact Flash as a primary boot device (EMIF). If not what is the limitation ?
2. Is it mandatory to use any specific mode of operation to use the CFlash as boot device. I prefer  PC card memory mode, because presently I am using this for accessing the Flash.
3.   What is the standard procedure followed in doing the same (ANY REFERENCE)- Steps/reqd mode/ document/ references etc
4.  Are there any customised tools/software repository/aplications to achieve the same.
5. And finally, I wanted to ask what are the specific requirements for a memory to be able to be used as a boot memory.

Regards

Sunil

  • Hi Sunil,

I have added the answers to your questions below.

    1. Is it possible to use the Compact Flash as a primary boot device (EMIF). If not what is the limitation ?

    - This does not seem possible as the boot loader does not support a file system (Please see spra763c.pdf on ti.com). If you are able to format the card with an unformatted partition you may be able to boot from it if the interfacing aspects are taken care of in your system. Please see spra803.pdf on interfacing compact flash to the C54x EMIF. You can use this as a guide for the C5510. A third party solution is also available (http://focus.ti.com/dsp/docs/thirdparty/catalog/devtoolsproductfolder.tsp?actionPerformed=productFolder&productId=5519)

    2. Is it mandatory to use any specific mode of operation to use the CFlash as boot device. I prefer  PC card memory mode, because presently I am using this for accessing the Flash.

    - I do not think there is any restriction on this.

    3.     What is the standard procedure followed in doing the same (ANY REFERENCE)

    - See documents mentioned above

    4.  Are there any customised tools/software repository/aplications to achieve the same.

    - No tools are available from TI. Please consider the third-party solution mentioned above.

    5. And finally, I wanted to ask what are the specific requirements for a memory to be able to be used as a boot memory.

    - This should be covered in the Bootloader app report - spra763c.pdf. The C5510 datasheet has electrical characteristics for the EMIF which any memory interfaced to it should meet.

    Regards,

    Sunil
