AM3517EVM NOR flash boot issue

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM3517

Hello,

I try to boot the AM3517 evaluation board using NOR flash.

To prepare X-Loader, U-Boot and configure S11 and S7 switches, I had used "AM35x-NOR-Flash-Support-ApplicationNote".

I've got many question about this application note :

1) "EVM Board modification (NOR Boot mode) -> From SOM board remove R235 register."

=> R235 is a resistor connected to combo (no relationship with NOR or NAND flashes !). Is this information is valid ? Do I have to remove another resistor ?

2) "NOR flash boot mode doesn't work with an application board < Rev4 revision due to hardware issue"

=> Where can I find this revision identifier in application board (mine seems to be set to "1014698 Rev. A") ?

3) Do I have to sign the "x-load.bin" file before downloading it in NOR flash ?

Thanks a lot for your help,

Jean-Marc.

    1) "EVM Board modification (NOR Boot mode) -> From SOM board remove R235 register."

[Vaibhav] Yes, R235 is the right register, if I remember correctly. It may possible that, you are using latest and greatest EVM board from LogicPD and the stamping has been changed. Also note that, if you are using latest and greatest EVM version, i would expect this to be fixed already in HW.

    2) "NOR flash boot mode doesn't work with an application board < Rev4 revision due to hardware issue"

=> Where can I find this revision identifier in application board (mine seems to be set to "1014698 Rev. A") ?

[Vaibhav] It looks like, you are using latest EVM boards. If you have understood the reason behind this change, then it should be pretty easy to cross check it with EVM schematics.

    3) Do I have to sign the "x-load.bin" file before downloading it in NOR flash ?

    [Vaibhav] NO.It is XIP.

    Thanks,

    Vaibhav

  • Many thanks Vaibhav for these informations.

To improve "AM35x-NOR-Flash-Support-ApplicationNote" content, the following information should be updated :

In "EVM Board modification (NOR Boot mode)" chapter :

=> Replace "From SOM board remove R235 register" by "From Baseboard remove R235 resistor"

=> Replace "NOTE: Please note that, once you remove R235 register from SOM board, ..." by "NOTE: Please note that, once you remove R235 resistor from Baseboard, ..."

    Best regards,

    Jean-Marc

  •

I am sure it was not "Baseboard", I remember when I was debugging this issue I root-caused it to SOM board and I had modified/removed SOM board with R235.

It may possible that, with latest SOM, something would have changed in schematics and layout, which I am not aware of. Let me cross-check first before concluding anything on this. Thanks for the input...

    Thanks,

    Vaibhav

  • The revision "Rev4" (referenced into application note) was for pre-production (pilot) phase.

You are right, I've been using a more recent evaluation board kit. On my baseboard, the R235 is a pull down resistor connected to S7.3

By supressing it, now I'm able to start x-loader from NOR flash but when starting the U-Boot, nothing appends !

I've been using  "ti-sdk-am3517-evm-05.02.00.00" package version and apply only the Patch : File:U-boot-AM3517-NOR-Flash-Support-04.02.00.06.tar.gz

If you have any idea about the origin of this problem ...

    Thank you

    Jean-Marc.

  • Sorry,

There is a mistake in my previous message. With my current configuration, the X-loader is executed from my SD-Card but it displays "Booting from NOR Flash ..."

So nothing is executed from NOR flash.

I will wait for your check on modification to do in SOM board.

    Thank you

    Jean-Marc.

  • Hello,

Finally, with the last hardware version from logic PD, you can follow the procedure describing "how booting on Nor flash" except suppressing any resistor from SOM board.

Then booting from NOR flash is OK (U-Boot and X-Loader are "executed" from NOR flash).

    Rgds,

    Jean-Marc.

Spending some time in this area right now and I can confirm these changes are correct and I've made these changes along with a clarification about where R235 is, physically.
