PROCESSOR-SDK-J784S4: How to customize the compression ratio of encoder

Part Number: PROCESSOR-SDK-J784S4

Tool/software:

Hi Experts,

I just want to customize the compression ratio of the encoder on QNX platform but I'm unable to find the correct place. As per the information provided on tutorial of TI website, it is Quantization parameter, which is responsible for the compression ration but I'm unable to locate the variable for maximum and minimum QP like 'min_qp/max_qp', or Initial QP settings like 'initial_qp_i/p/b'.

Currently I'm using '09_01_00_06, version of sdk.

Thanks.

  • Hello Hemraj,

Here is some initial information on compression ratio:
Encoder compression ratio is use-case specific. I have done some testing on a h264 1920x1080@30fps stream with 569 frames and got a compression ratio of 70:1. Compression ratio can be influenced by several factors (image quality, image size, fps, profile). If you encode a larger image the compression ratio will be increased. Also if you encode an image with poor quality, the ratio will be increased too.
Typically, you can control the ratio by setting the target bit-rate. In general, the recommended bit-rate for 1920x1080 is 3 to 8 Mbps. Therefore, the compression ratio would be in range of 100:1 to 250:1.

To modify bitrate during an encode process you would have to pass the appropriate configuration file. Instructions on how this is done is shown here. Additionally, here is an example of the cfg file to pass. Pass on the correct parameters in the cfg file.
