J784S4XEVM: Boot from eMMC from userspace (Linux)

Hi Team,

I want to boot from eMMC from userspace from Linux in J784S4 and automate it through a script. And I tried with mmc utilities but it was not supporting to do all the operations as it don't support fatload commands like " fatload mmc 1 ${loadaddr} tiboot3.bin " and also we can't set env variables from Linux using mmc utilities also. So to make it work what are the steps I need to do to boot from eMMC from linux.

Actually I tried with following script , where mmc is user application (https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/utils/mmc/mmc-utils.git/commit/?id=123fd8b2ac3933be1319486fb1f32236a4a86a7c) and I want boot fom BOOT0 partition.At the same time I want to delete a general purpose partitions(gp0,gp1..) , but I didn't find any mmc command to do.

./mmc bootpart enable 1 1 /dev/mmcblk0
./mmc erase trim 0x0 0x2000 /dev/mmcblk0
mkdir /mnt/sdcard-boot
mount /dev/mmcblk1p1 /mnt/sdcard-boot
./mmc boot_operation /mnt/sdcard-boot/tiboot3.bin /dev/mmcblk0boot0
./mmc boot_operation /mnt/sdcard-boot/tispl.bin /dev/mmcblk0boot0
./mmc boot_operation /mnt/sdcard-boot/u-boot.img /dev/mmcblk0boot0
# create a partition for rootfs #
./mmc gp create -y 11000000 1 0 0 /dev/mmcblk0
sudo mkfs.ext4 /dev/mmcblk0gp0
tar -xvf tisdk-adas-image-j721s2-evm.tar.xz -C /dev/mmcblk0gp0

Hi Dharanija,

Question is not clear to me, can you rephrase your question what you want to achieve ?

AFAIK we already shared the steps to boot from the emmc.

Hi Diwakar,

I want to boot from eMMC in J721S2/J784S4 through some user application and automate it through a script. By runing that

1. I should be able to write the boot things(tiboot3.bin,tispl.bin,u-boot.img) into BOOT0 partition from SD card. And I want to give environment variables from the same script or through uEnv.txt.

2. Want to create a partition in UDA for ROOTFS contents and untar the rootfs file from the script itself.

I want to do all the above steps by running a script instead of interrupting boot process at U-boot and doing the things.

Hi Dharanija

This is custom thing and TI cant help much here.As suggestion you can make use of minicom script to flash it to the emmc while booting the device using sd card.

Thanks for the suggestion.

1. From userspace (Linux) can we write a file into BOOT0 partition by any means why because by giving lsblk command , I am gettig following output like " Read only"

2. where as from u-boot, if I give mmc info command ,it is telling that BOOT0, BOOT1 are not write protected.

3. Where as BOOT_WP : 0x00 .

What does it concludes please give clarity?
