AM3359 EVM, industrial ethernet (EtherCAT precisely) details?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PROFIBUS, AM3359, AM1810

Hi,

chip looks like pretty well suited for usage in industrial applications.

Where can I get information about planned real time ethernet protocols, OS with real-time capabilities and so on?

What licensing is expected for industrial ethernet stacks - are they third party products (IXXAT, PORT) that will be licensed with this third parties?

Also, what about EVM for 3357/3359 (EtherCAT capable variants)? I see only AM3358EVM, and it is not suitable.

  • Hello,

Thanks for your interest in our latest products with integrated multiple industrial communications support. As you indicate, this scalable AM335x family with 6 different pin-pin compatible products in 3 different speed grades (275/600/720MHz) is exciting for many industrial automation applications.

Sorry for the delay in answering the questions. We've officially launched EtherCAT support last week at the SPS show so we can provide more details about this now.. :-) We'r excited to show 2 dev tools specifically for Industrial apps - IDK and ICE.

The firmware for the PRUs is provided from TI directly with no additional fee. The stacks for different protocols will come from different 3Ps. We will have EtherCAT/PROFIBUS available this year followed by other stacks in 1H/2012.

So, for EtherCAT, PRU firmware will be from TI and the EtherCAT stack will come from ETG (ETherCAT Technology Group). The EtherCAT stack is available for free for ETG members and membership is also free. To enable our customers to go to market quickly, we also include EtherCAT evaluation license stack in our SDK so you can evaluate the complete application quickly.

Pl see the device comparison at the product folder below.

  • Dear Sirk

Talking about PROFIBUS: will TI provide the stack or an evaluation library, like ethercat ?

    Thanks in advance.

    Marcelo

  • Yes. We have this already for AM1810 device and we'll have this for AM335x in 1Q/2012. PROFIBUS uses stack from our 3P, TMG and PRU firmware is from TI.

  • Srikanth:

Just wondering if these chips can handle both communications and motor control at the same time. The AM335x chips have 3 PWM channels, eQEP module and ADC inputs needed for motor control. Have you guys tested, for instance, field oriented control of a PMSM while communicating over EtherCAT?

  • Yes, we demonstrated single axis motor control with EtherCAT on AM335x.The ADC was done external in a piccolo device.

    Thanks.
