Slow build on CCS V5 when using Grace

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CCSTUDIO

Hello all,

I am experimenting with a launchpad with MSP430 G2231 as well as G2553.  It has been a reasonably smooth experience up to this point.  I have just had something daunting happen, though.  I fired up a new project for the G2231 using a blank Grace project. because I wanted to experiment with the RTS a bit.  Suddenly my build times have gone from about 30 secs. to an hour or more.  What I am seeing repeatedly is "making package.mak (vecause of .xdcenv.mak)" - I haven't counted, but probably a few hundred times this repeats.

I'm using the latest v5 - as of a week ago - on WinXP.  Could someone help me piece together what is going on here?  This seems rather drastic.

  • I don't know what I've done here, but I would appreciate some help.

I have gone back to the v4 MCU edition - I have uninstalled and reinstalled - I re-downloaded the MCU edition as well as Grace 1.00.01.83 (which includes xdctools 3.21).

I have uninstalled some more.  I have uninstalled everything I can find ccs related.  I have deleted the C:\CCS directory.  I have deleted the C:\Program Files\Texas Instruments directory.  I have deleted the InstallJammer directory.  After cleaning up every trace I could find of anything ccs related (including scanning through the registry), I reinstalled only the v4 MCU edition only with MSP430 support.  Then I reinstalled Grace 1.00.01.83 on my XP system.  Grace is still unusable.

When creating a Grace project, the system goes into building the configuro package.  I found by running taskmgr that about 50 instances of gmake start up (yes, I did say 50), it stays in this state for hours, and any change to main.cfg causes it to start all over again.

If someone has any ideas, I would greatly appreciate it.  I'm getting a bit desperate here.

  • Michael,

    Yes, that's pretty odd...

Are you just trying to build one of the standard Grace examples that you created in the New Project Wizard, or are you trying to build something custom?  If it's the latter case, please just try and create an "empty" Grace example and see if you can build that.

  • Thanks for the reply.

This happens at this point simply creating a blank Grace project via the wizard.  On exit from the wizard, it begins to verify main.cfg and build configuro, and things hit stall.

  • Michael,

Still no idea, but I'm wondering if you are still planning on migrating to CCS v5?

The final production (GA) release of CCS 5.1.0 was just released, so if you are planning on migrating anyway, this might be an opportune time to jump.

    Dave

  • Thank you for the input, but it would appear that as mysteriously as the problem appeared, it has now disappeared.  After cleaning out anything and everything TI and Eclipse I could find, then reinstalling ONLY v4 MCU edition with Grace 1.00, things have gone back at this point to functioning.  I really don't know what exactly started or ended the problem.

Right now I am in the middle of a project for a customer, so I'd rather not beta v5 yet, especially not after what happened the first time.  I do however have a couple of questions.

It appears from perusing the v5 downloads that up until now, the v5 versions have NOT been recommended for MSP430 users.  Has this now changed?  Is there full MSP430 support in v5?

Also, what about licensing?  Will there be a MCU edition?  I note the temporary license, which expires in a couple of months.  What is TI's plan regarding licensing for v5?

  • CCS 5.1 is now released and it includes support for the MSP430.  You should definitely move to it when your project allows.

See the http://www.ti.com/tool/ccstudio site.  If you have already purchased CCStudio Microcontrollers (MCU) v4 and have a valid subscription then during November you will receive an upgrade copy of ALL v5. Look for an email from myRegistered_Software@list.ti.com. Use the Activation ID and instructions to activate your new CCStudio v5.
