AM6442: CPSW ping does not work

Part Number: AM6442

Tool/software:

Hi,

Were a using AM6442 in our custom board with linux sdk 10.01.10.04.

Our problem is related to the configuration of the ethernet ports. We use 1 cpsw port and 2 icssg port with MII. Two problems are encountered :

  1. We are unable to ping the cpsw port with static address or with a dhcp server. The interface is found but a ping from a pc does not work. When we change the transfer speed in the pc, the board detect that change.
  2. The other problem is with icssg who does not detect the phy:  icssg-prueth icssg0-eth: couldn't connect to phy ethernet-phy@3. it's seems like the physic address in the device tree is not good but, i know for sure it's 3 because icssg port was detected with linux sdk 9.02.01.10. We started having this problem when we switch in linux sdk 10.01.10.04.

Here is the boot output and the device tree file

    We are unable to ping the cpsw port with static address or with a dhcp server. The interface is found but a ping from a pc does not work. When we change the transfer speed in the pc, the board detect that change.

    I noticed that your "ethtool eth0" outputs selected speed as 1000Mb/s but your bootup log shows "am65-cpsw-nuss 8000000.ethernet eth0: Link is Up - 100Mbps/Full". I'm assuming this is because you changed the transfer speed on the PC/link partner side?

    Can you clarify your hardware setup? CPSW port eth0 is directly connected to a link partner (the PC) with no switch in between?

    The other problem is with icssg who does not detect the phy:  icssg-prueth icssg0-eth: couldn't connect to phy ethernet-phy@3.

    Can you check if the below "bstatus" is a typo and the compiled dtb is not with this typo applied?

    };Code

    I'm assuming that you were previously testing with the same custom board on SDK 09.02.01.10, is that correct?

    Was the device tree you used for SDK 09.02.01.10 the same exact one that you are currently using for SDK 10.01.10.04, the one you have attached to this thread?

    I also noticed that the second port of ICSSG0 is configured as "fixed-link" in the device tree? Why was this done? Based on your explanation, it appears there is one DP838221 PHY connected to each ICSSG0 port.

  • Hi, thanks for the response

    • noticed that your "ethtool eth0" outputs selected speed as 1000Mb/s but your bootup log shows "am65-cpsw-nuss 8000000.ethernet eth0: Link is Up - 100Mbps/Full". I'm assuming this is because you changed the transfer speed on the PC/link partner side?Yes like you said, i changed it before the second message
    • Can you clarify your hardware setup? CPSW port eth0 is directly connected to a link partner (the PC) with no switch in between?

      Yes, the cpsw port is directly connected to a link partner, there is no switch in between.

    • Can you check if the below "bstatus" is a typo and the compiled dtb is not with this typo applied?

      That was a mistake from me. But there were no error in the compilation with bstatus. I replaced it with status but the problem is still here.

    • I'm assuming that you were previously testing with the same custom board on SDK 09.02.01.10, is that correct?

      Yes, at first i started the test with  SDK 09.02.01.10 and after i switched on SDK 10.01.10.04. The information in the thread in product by SDK 10.01.10.04

    • I also noticed that the second port of ICSSG0 is configured as "fixed-link" in the device tree? Why was this done? Based on your explanation, it appears there is one DP838221 PHY connected to each ICSSG0 port.

      Yes we are using two DP83822, one is connected directly to a ethercat chip and the other in the am6442. Thus, the MII0 is connected to the chip ethercat that's why it's fixed-link.

  • Hi Serigne,

    For issue #1 - CPSW eth0 no ping response:

    I see the ethtool -S eth0 statistics on the custom board shows 98 good transmit frames but no good receive frames. Is it possible to check the ethtool -S statistics on the link partner device? Please share the results if possible.

    For issue #2 - ICSSG0 couldn't detect phy:

    Was the device tree you used for SDK 09.02.01.10 the same exact one that you are currently using for SDK 10.01.10.04, the one you have attached to this thread?

    Are you able to measure the MDIO/MDC signals see if there is MDIO communication?

    Can you try "iep = <&icssg0_iep0>,  <&icssg0_iep1>;" instead of "ti,iep = <&icssg0_iep0>,  <&icssg0_iep1>;" in your device tree?

    -Daolin

  • For issue #1 - CPSW eth0 no ping response:

    It's a windows PC, i can not use ethtool but i use wireshark. When doing a ping from the board to the link partner, nothing is received in the link.

    For issue #2 - ICSSG0 couldn't detect phy:

    Yes, it's same device tree. I just change  "iep = <&icssg0_iep0>,  <&icssg0_iep1>;" for  "ti,iep = <&icssg0_iep0>,  <&icssg0_iep1>;"  because k3-am64-evm.dts in the sdk have the same line. When using  "iep = <&icssg0_iep0>,  <&icssg0_iep1>;" instead of "ti,iep = <&icssg0_iep0>,  <&icssg0_iep1>;" this error appears in the output :[   14.806181] icssg-prueth icssg0-eth: error -ENODEV: iep0 get failed

    We are able to measure MDIO/MDC signal. The MDIO signal have 3V because of the pull up, but don't see any communication. We noticed also that the PHY led do not light up when an ethernet cable is connected.

  • Hi Serigne,

    For issue #1 - CPSW eth0 no ping response:

    Wireshark on your Windows PC will only be able to show packets that have been successfully received. Any dropped packets on the wire would have happened at the MAC hardware layer and wouldn't be able to show up on Wireshark. The fact that you are reporting no packets show up on Wireshark indicates that all packets transferred from the custom board to the link partner could have been dropped/corrupted anywhere from the custom board transmit side to the link partner receive side.

    Do you have spare known working TI EVM that can run Linux? If so, can you use that EVM as a link partner instead of the Windows PC to view the ethtool -S statistics? Using ethtool -S is advantageous because it shows statistics on the MAC hardware layer (and subsequently any dropped or corrupted packets that have been received).

    For additional debugging tips on this no ping response issue please take a look at this debug guide, especially Section 9 "Follow-the-packet" www.ti.com/.../spradj8.pdf

    For issue #2 - ICSSG0 couldn't detect phy:

    What does the MDC signal look like?

    The fact that the PHY LED is not lit up upon connection indicates the PHY is not in a good state such that it can establish a link with the link partner.

    Do you have a pinmux setting configured for &icssg0_iep0 and &icssg0_iep1? See the below from k3-am642-evm.dts for an example.

    &icssg1_iep0 {
    	pinctrl-names = "default";
    	pinctrl-0 = <&icssg1_iep0_pins_default>;
    };

    -Daolin

  • HI Daolin,

    For issue #1 - CPSW eth0 no ping response:

    I use a linux link partner for testing and i run the command ethtool -S. Here is the output:

    For issue #2 - ICSSG0 couldn't detect phy:

    We don't have pinmux setting configured for &icssg0_iep0 and &icssg0_iep1. Those pins are used in our board. Can the problem be from that ?

    The MDC signal stay at 0.

  • Hi Serigne,

    For issue #1 - CPSW eth0 no ping response:

    Can you verify that before the ping test and cable connection, the ethtool -S statistics start at 0?

    Does the micrel-ksz9031 PHY connected to the CPSW have an internal RX delay of 2ns?

    For issue #2 - ICSSG0 couldn't detect phy:

    The fact that the MDC signal is not showing a clock signal indicates that the MDIO is not operating, hence why the PHY couldn't be detected. Could the PHY potentially be kept in reset?

    Please check if your board has a GPIO pin connected to the reset pin on the PHY connected to the ICSSG0 interface. What is the state of this reset pin when the ICSSG0 couldn't detect phy error shows (i.e. when booted into Linux)?

    I did the test now in with evaluation board evm as link partner to be more sure of the result for ethtool -S command. Before cable connection we have 0 for all the values:

    The  micrel-ksz9031 PHY have an default internal RX delay of 1,2ns. We try to add a longer delay in the device tree with rxc-skew-ps and rxdv-skew-ps to make it 2.1ns. Here is what we have done:

    cpsw3g_phy0: ethernet-phy@0 {
    		bootph-all;
    		reg = <0>;
    		rxc-skew-ps = <1800>; //900 ps
    		rxdv-skew-ps = <0>;
    		//ti,rx-internal-delay = <DP83867_RGMIIDCTL_2_00_NS>;
    		//ti,fifo-depth = <DP83867_PHYCR_FIFO_DEPTH_4_B_NIB>;
    	};

    When we measure the delay with RXC and RD0 for example we find something between 12 and 13 ns.

    We noticed that the RX clock is 25Mhz but TX clock is 2.5Mhz. When comparing with the old version of the board we have 25Mhz for both clock. The clock used for the KSZ9031 is 25Mhz.

    We also noticed that sometimes the link on the custom board goes down and up himself.

    For issue #2 - ICSSG0 couldn't detect phy:

    This issue is now resolved. We verified the reset pin like you said, there was a resistor that kept always the reset value at 0. We remove the resistor and now we can see the phy and the command ping is successful.

  • Hi Serigne,

    For issue #1 - CPSW eth0 no ping response:

    >>>After a ping from both side, we have destination host unreachable. Here is the result of ethtool -S of the link partner (evaluation board):

    I assume the ping from both sides means that this was after ping from the custom board to the link partner AND after ping from link partner to custom board?

    To confirm, the evaluation board you are using as a link partner has a known working eth0 interface?

    I see that there is a nonzero tx_good_frames counter (tx_good_frames: 72) which the link partner is transmitting good frames to the custom board. On the receiving side of the link partner, the rx_good_frames counter remains zero, which means no packets sent from the custom board are received by the link partner's MAC at all.

    We know that from the custom board side, there are good transmit frames sent to the link partner but no good receive frames from the link partner. There appears to be 2 issues:

    1. No transmitted frames from the custom board to the link partner are received by the link partner. If the link partner is a known working board (no issues with transmit or receive), the next step is to check the PHY registers (micrel-ksz9031 PHY on the custom board) and see if there is a register that detects number of packets that were transmitted.

    2. No received frames on the custom board that are transmitted by the link partner. Adding an internal RX delay is to ensure good frames are received when using an RGMII interface.

    >>>We noticed that the RX clock is 25Mhz but TX clock is 2.5Mhz. When comparing with the old version of the board we have 25Mhz for both clock. The clock used for the KSZ9031 is 25Mhz.

    What is the difference between the old version and the current version? (i.e. is the same PHY being used?)

    >>>We also noticed that sometimes the link on the custom board goes down and up himself.

    The link going up/down could indicate an issue with either the Ethernet cable or the PHY. Can you try a different Ethernet cable?

    How often does the link up/down occur?

  • For issue #1 - CPSW eth0 no ping response:

    We resolved the problem by changing the cpsw configuration in the boot device tree. Now we can ping and the communication is fine. We think it's because of the pins and driver difference which makes the cpsw initialization does not work.

  • Hi Serigne,

    For issue #1 - CPSW eth0 no ping response:

    As a reference for future readers facing similar issues, can you share specifically what was changed in the device tree to enable this to work?

  • Hi Doalin,

    For issue #1 - CPSW eth0 no ping response:

    At first, we did not match the device tree with our custom board. That seems to be problem. So, we changed the cpsw ethernet port configuration to match what we wanted in the board. It's now working find after building and replacing uboot.

  • Hi Serigne,

    For issue #1 - CPSW eth0 no ping response:

    You mean the following part of the device tree was changed?

    /* Ethernet CPSW */
    &cpsw_port1 {
    	bootph-all;
    	phy-mode = "rgmii";
    	phy-handle = <&cpsw3g_phy0>;
    	reset-gpios = <&gpio0 51 GPIO_ACTIVE_LOW>;
    };

  • Hi Daolin,

    Yes we did exactly the same thing in the device tree attached to my first message but in the uboot with the appropriate pin for ethernet.

    &cpsw_port1 {
    	bootph-all;
    	phy-mode = "rgmii";
    	phy-handle = <&cpsw3g_phy0>;
    };

    &cpsw_port2 {
    	status = "disabled";
    };

    &cpsw3g_mdio {
    	bootph-all;
    	status = "okay";
    	pinctrl-names = "default";
    	pinctrl-0 = <&mdio1_pins_default>;

    	cpsw3g_phy0: ethernet-phy@0 {
    		bootph-all;
    		reg = <0>;
    	};
    };
    &cpsw3g {
    	bootph-all;
    	pinctrl-names = "default";
    	pinctrl-0 = <&mycpsw1_pins_default>;

    	/* Map HW8_TS_PUSH to GENF1 */
    	cpts@3d000 {
    		ti,pps = <7 1>;
    	};
    };

    /* EtCAT ICSSG */
    &icssg0_mdio {
    	bstatus = "okay";
    	pinctrl-names = "default";
    	pinctrl-0 = <&mypruicssg0mdio1_pins_default>;

    	icssg0_phy1: ethernet-phy@3 {
    		reg = <0x3>;
    	};
    };
