Hi Kevin,

We are using DRA821U2-Q1 SoC with LPDDR4, MT53D1024M32D4DT which has 8GB density (dual channel, dual band).

We started with DRA821U TI EVM which has DDR: MT53D1024M32D4DT which has 4GB density.

Now we need to re-config the DDR register configuration with tool: https://www.ti.com/lit/zip/spracu8

I noticed that MT53D1024M32D4DT was used on TDA4VE (TI EVM).

Question:

  1. When select DRA821U(TI EVM) and Click on Load User Config, this will load EVM board config, correct? then I can revise for my board, right?
  2. Can I take the TDA4VE (TI EVM) DDR parameter configuration from the configuration spreadsheet for my DRA821U2-Q1 board since it uses the same DDR device as TDA4AE(TI EVM)?

Of course, I will take numbers for DDRSS_0 only since DAR821U2 has only DDRSS_0

    I answered this question in the below E2E thread (which I assume is related to your project since it linked back to your prior thread, and is essentially the same question asked on the same day as you have asked here)

    NO, you cannot use the DDR configuration file from other TI SOC EVMs for a different SOC EVM.

    I followed the user guide and DDR : MT53E2G32D4DE-046 AAT:C datasheet, finished the configuration.

    it runs u-boot and linux boot without problem only when I chose  (1GB)

    DDR Data Bus Width : 32

    DDR Density(per channel for single rank): 4

    Chip selects/Ranks : 1

    it fails sometimes on u-boot and linux boot when I chose (8GB)

    DDR Data Bus Width : 32

    DDR Density(per channel for single rank): 16

    Chip selects/Ranks : 2

    other DRAMtiming, IO control are same in all settings.

    do you see any problem maybe?

    Can you provide example logs of the failure?

    Aside from the DDR configuration, what other changes have you made between builds when switching between 1GB and 8GB. When changing memory size, there are a few considerations:

    1. The DDR register configuration (which you have performed through the register configuration tool)
    2. System awareness of available memory
      1. As an example, Linux needs to know how much available memory is present and unfortunately this doesn't come from the DDR driver / initialization.

    Additionally, tRFC is density dependent. Make sure that if you are using a single value for both 4Gb and 16Gb that you are using the larger value.

    Lastly, what happens if you keep density at 16Gb but just toggle the ranks between 1 and 2 to see pass / fail scenario?

    tRFCab: 280 to 280

    tRFCpb: 140 to 190

    also I will try to toggle rank 1 and 2 to see what happens.

    This is the same tool you already have. It originated in Excel format, and future support will be through sysconfig.

    Line "DRAM: x GiB (effective x GiB)" should correspond to how much memory is being reported to Linux. Actually, I am surprised 1GB was working for you if this is not being updated. 

    How to change this value has varied over time / SDK version. In older SDK versions, there were some pointers in the PDF linked above that indicated how to change. In more recent SDKs, I think you need to update the "memory" node in the device DTSI file. For instance, see lines 11 - 17 in the linked file below which sets up 4GB for the DRA821 EVM.

    Thanks for your reply. Can you elaborate a bit about line 11 to line 17? It seems a little bit different from the common memory binds format shown below

    };

    The above specifies a memory region using a pair of numbers, but line 14 & 15 use 4 numbers to specify a region. Plus, line 14 use the same pair of numbers twice. Do you have any documentation to explain the structure?

  • Hi Charles,

    Like your example, lines 14 and 15 are defining the memory base address and size. There are 4 numbers , where the first 2 represent a 64-bit address and the next 2 represent a 64-bit size. Line 14 is stating that there is 2GB memory available starting at address 0x80000000 , and line 15 is stating that there is 2GB memory available starting at address 0x880000000 (i.e, 4GB total across the two regions).

    Note that you should only need to update the size and not the address. If you have 2GB or less, you should remove line 15. If you have more than 2GB, then you need to keep line 15 and update the size to indicate your total memory space minus 2GB.

    However, when I try to do memtester, I was able to test 1GB memory but failed if I try 2GB. I attached the log.

    I don't think this type of error is related to the DDR configuration (i.e, DDR controller / PHY and LPDDR4 register settings).

    Seems like something may still be off, like maybe MMU setup, etc. Will likely need someone from our software team to comment further.

    Can you provide the SDK version you are using, along with a patch file to illustrate the changes you have made?
