LP-EM-CC2340R5: Cannot close the watchdog

Part Number: LP-EM-CC2340R5

Tool/software:

The watchdog doesn't seem to function as the driver documentation indicates.

As stated in this thread:

https://e2e.ti.com/support/wireless-connectivity/bluetooth-group/bluetooth/f/bluetooth-forum/1267563/lp-em-cc2340r5-cannnot-clear-watchdog-in-watchdogcallback

The watchdog doesn't support a callback, and you cannot prevent it from causing a reset. It'd be nice if TI fixed their documentation.

A problem I'm having is disabling/closing the watchdog after it's been started.

Watchdog_close(watchdogHandle);

doesn't stop the watchdog from timing out. How can I disable the watchdog?

The reference manual doesn't indicate a watchdog enable bit, so presumably it starts as soon as a value is written to CKMD:WDTCNT.

Can we never stop the watchdog once we do that?

Any insight would be helpful. Thanks.

  • Hello Bob,

WatchdogLPF3.h does mention that "Watchdog_close() is not supported by this driver implementation. Once started, the Watchdog timer can only be stopped by a hardware reset."

The TRM has a note: "When this counter is running, there is no way to stop this counter other than a device reset. This is to prevent accidentally disabling the WDT and leaving the device in an unresponsive state."

This appears to be verified by the CKMD:WDTCNT description: "A write to this field immediately starts (or restarts) the counter. It will count down from the written value.
If the counter reaches 0, a reset will be generated.  A write value of 0 immediately generates a reset."

Thus you will need to keep clearing the watchdog consistently once it has been started.

    Regards,
    Ryan

  • Yes, I do see that now in WatchdogLPF3.h. It's unfortunate TI won't update the driver documentation in the SDK, but I do realize I need to take that with a grain of salt.

    Thanks, Ryan.
