AM625: [SDK 9.0] How to remove default TI boot logo and process psplash ok

Part Number: AM625

Tool/software:

Hello TI

We are using SDK 9.0 Yocto linux.

We failed to remove the default TI boot logo and progress bar on our system image.

We don't know the detail of psplash operation/setting, please guide.

We try to remove the psplash in the image we build by adding below bbappend in our meta-custom :

ti_am62x/sources/meta-custom/recipes-core/images$ cat tisdk-default-image.bbappend
# Remove splash screen package
IMAGE_INSTALL:remove = "psplash"
IMAGE_FEATURES:remove = "splash"

Then, after power on, the psplash is removed our system (no psplash binary or its run file).

But we found that our LCD and backlight is off and when we try to display a picture ,  sudo fbi -d /dev/fb0 -a  /tmp/img.png, then it shows nothing.

Based on our observation (not remove psplash) case:

1. When power on, we see the default TI boot logo and progress bar is shown "once" on our lcd, but in the following next power on, it does not show any thing on our lcd.

2. When we run " #/usr/bin/psplash" on shell,  we found this binary  in /etc/init.d/psplash.sh ,  the TI boot logo is shown and run  sudo fbi -d /dev/fb0 -a  /tmp/img.png, we could see the img.png on the LCD.

It seems that to make custom image display, psplash is needed (?).

How to remove the psplash and make our display works (lcd/backlight-able to display img.png)?

  • Hi,

Can you please check if following can help:

    1.

    IMAGE_INSTALL:remove = "psplash"
    IMAGE_FEATURES:remove = "splash"

Only remove splash, and let psplash remain.

    2. Remove splash by disabling this kconfig within yocto: CONFIG_SPL_VIDEO

  • Hello

Removing CONFIG_SPL_VIDEO in u-boot, it does not effect (also SPL related CONFIG_xx) as below.

  • Hi Paul,

Please try setting CONFIG_SPL_VIDEO=n instead of just commenting, you do not need to remove other SPL configs.
I have tried this on my end, and it is able to remove the splash in u-boot proper stage.

  • Hello

We try to do the setting and made a clean build for our yocto SDK but still failed. May you help to check and clarify below?

    1. Below is our full patch of u-boot

/usr/bin/psplash exists and it run when kernel starts.

    paul@44Server:~/300G_HDD/ti_am62x/build/arago-tmp-default-glibc/work/am62xx_evm_k3r5-oe-linux-gnueabi/u-boot-ti-staging/1_2023.04+gitAUTOINC+24098ea90d-r0.psdk3/git$ git status

    2. psplash as below, it seems it is a part of kernel process (ref: log1_firstboot.txt), not u-boot?

psplash boot logo and progress bar:

    3. We write our system image using balenaEthcher to a Micro SD card and boot from it.

The first boot (as in  log1_firstboot.txt) we could see the psplash boot log and progress bar are shwon on LCD but in the next system boot,  it does not show. Please refer to log2_secondboot.txt below.

Our goal is to remove this psplash boot logo and progress bar, or it is ok to keep it but it must show in every reboot; not just only the first boot.

    Please suggest. Thanks.

    log2_secondboot.txt

  • Hi,

Please checkout the following file located in the Processor SDK:
    <SDK>/board-support/<ti-u-boot directory>/configs/am62x_evm_prune_splashscreen.config

This will help disable the TI Logo, psplash along with progress bar.

Do not forget to remove the psplash service from Yocto as you were doing earlier.
