Processor AM437x

my kernel is unable to detect eth0 sometimes during power up but it doesn't happen with eth1 phy and i am unable to understand why i am getting this issue if anyone know please let me know it will be a great help for us.

  • Hi,

    A detection failure could be that the PHY is not initializing correctly. This is typically not a processor issue as the PHY has to have the correct voltages. Is the same PHY on both CPSW ports? (I have assumed here that the ethernet ports are the CPSW ports, is this correct?) There needs to be an initial review by the TI Ethernet team to make sure the board implementation is correct, I will ask them to take a look at this post.

  • Hi,

    Thank you for the console log. The messages captured are consistent with a PHY that is not answering the MDIO Probe and is possibly indicating the PHY in a bad state. To continue further debug there needs to be a hardware analysis of the PHY when the boot process has left the PHY in this condition. I will ask the Ethernet team that supports this PHY to review this thread. In preparation the Ethernet team will need some measurements taken. Please refer to Section 6 of the basic Ethernet app note. The Ethernet team also has provided a troubleshooting guide.

    This part has been checked a long time back from out team and we have also shown this to TI India team. and they have confirmed that there is no issue with respect to hardware in this. You can check with Ti India team for the same.

    To continue debug we will need a scope or logic analyzer capture of the MDIO lines that shows when the PHY is not being detected by the processor. Since this condition happens after a power cycle this should be easily captured on a scope/logic analyzer. I would recommend using the Power on Reset signal of the board to know when the system is starting after a power cycle. Then use the console log to look for when the PHY was not detected and then review the scope capture to look at the MDIO transaction of the processor sending out a message and the PHY not responding. A good beginning step would be to gain knowledge of what a successful MDIO transaction looks like after a boot.

    To simplify the debug you have to isolate to only this PHY. If there are other PHYs on the same MDIO bus they will have to be disabled in the board DTS file. Disabling other PHYs in the board DTS will do the isolation needed.

    One doubt I was having with respect to disabling via DTS. Currently we are having 2 Port device. and in that if eth0 is not detected it won't go ahead. But could you tell me where specifically I have to disable port 1 in DTS file than that would be great because we are not having that much grip in kernel as you are.

  • Hi,

    This debug approach I am suggesting is to focus only if the eth0 interface is able to communicate with PHY attached. Other application testing for example would not be necessary. The testing I am proposing is the power cycle the board and look to see if the PHY was identified. Keep powering cycling the board until you see in the console log the PHY was not identified and then review the logic analyzer trace to confirm that the PHY actually responded to the processor request.

    To disable the interface you will need to disable the interface and remove the PHY definition for ethernet 1. If you attach your DTS source file I will indicate the portions of the file you will need to modify.

    In above snippet I have changed the specific line status = "disabled"; for eth1. Which I think you are expecting me to do if I am not wrong. Based on that in console log if I will do ifconfig than I will only get eth0 and eth1 will not come as you can see in below console logs.

    What you have done is correct. There a couple of an additional steps. You will need to comment out this node as well, pruss1_eth1_phy. You do not want the second interface to probe for a PHY. 

    After commenting out the phy node to get a successful DTS compile you will need to comment out this line in the pruss1_emac1: ethernet-mii1 node

    phy-handle = <&pruss1_eth1_phy>;

    The goal is not see the the second PHY show up during the boot log. After making these changes please attach the boot log.

    According to me I am unable to see any part of eth1 as you said in the pervious comment. However you can confirm for the same so that we can proceed further for checking the waveform.

    I agree that I do not see any eth1 interface and I also only see this for the PHY

    I do not see anything for phy[1], so only phy[0] traffic should be on the mdio bus.

    To summarize what you are saying is that you are capturing traffic on the bus even though there is not a message indicating PHY detection?

    I was trying to upload the image but it's not uploading so I have kept the zip file in the attachment. The thing which I am saying is there is no difference in signal detection when phy is detected and when phy is not detected so I have kept single image in the given attachment.

    What is the waveform a capture of? At the moment the traces do not look like an MDIO clock and data signals. This document provides an example timing diagram of the what expected interaction with a PHY looks like, section 2.4.6. Please note this PHY analysis app note may not be the PHY that is in use but it provides an example of how to look at the MDIO bus.
