DRA821U: Direct connection to SFP ?

Part Number: DRA821U
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRA821

Tool/software:

I am using the DRA821 and would like to know if I can use the SGMII interface for a DIRECT connection to a SFP.

I would want to connect the DRA821 SGMII  TX/RX differential pairs wired directly to the SFP cage connector.

I have not found any reference designs NOR documentation that details if this is possible.

I need to support both 1000Base-X and (1G) SGMII.

Thanks,

Steve

  • Hi Steve,

I do not think you can directly connect the SERDES diff pairs to the SFP without using the SGMII Ethernet PHY; I would also talk to my colleague on the same and get back to you.

  • My understanding is the SFP is the network PHY.  We have not tested with any SFP module, and I am not aware of its electrical characteristics for the SERDES inputs of the SFP.  On our EVMs, we do use network PHYs on adapter boards - so similar configuration of SERDES signals traveling through board-to-board connector to PHY.
