DDR III controller memory size support

With respect to the DM8148 DDR III controller, in referencing the SPRS647B ( datasheet ) and the SPRUGZ8 ( Technical Reference Manual ), I am confused regarding the total memory size supported by the Dm8148.

Datasheet page 2 indicates 2GB total memory address space, where the TRM page 910, section 6.1.2, indicates 1GB toal memory address space.

Can you tell me, if I want to use x16 DDR III devices, how much total memory does the device support and what is your recommended configuration of the devices ( number of devices, banks, etc ) for my preferred x16 configuration. We want to have the maximum allowable memory connected to the DM8148.

Thank you

  • Bryan,

The DM8148 support 2GB max like DS say since it has 2 modules.  The TRM typically has general information for each module, but doesn’t refer to how many modules are in a specific device.  The datasheet has the details specific to the device, including how many modules for a certain IP.

  • Thank you,

In further looking at the Address lines, and number of banks, plus the fact that there are two DDR IP blocks in the device, it seems like the DM8148 should be able to address 4Gb ( bits ) in total. Documentation indicates a maximum of 2Gb ( bits ). Can you explain the best way for me to utilize the maximum memory space by using x16 wide DDR 3 memory chips?   At first I thought using four 4Gb ( bit ) x16 wide IC's would be the proper choice but now I am not sure.

    Thank you.
