Looking for DSP to interface with a DAC

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DAC3162, TMS320C6457

Hello,

I'm looking for a DSP to interface with a DAC that does at least 400 MSPS output.

I am looking at the DAC3162 and was hoping someone would have some helpful information on what DSP would be needed to interface with this DAC,  or if they have any advice on a DSP/DUC I should be looking at that would be very useful, as I don't know what DUCs are out there that interface with TI DSPs.

Thanks,

Matt

  • Matt,

What data do you want to drive out at 400 MSPS? How many bits wide do you want the DAC to be? Why do you also mention DUCs?

  • We are developing a pulse generator. We are looking for about 12 bit data bus to the DAC.

We've actually changed our method a bit and are looking to use circular memory or something like a FIFO buffer to load up with the data and clock out to a DAC able to process at 400 MSPS output.

  • My recommendation is to change this discussion to be about the DAC and not the DSP. Start a new thread on the E2E Data Converters -> High Speed Data Converters Forum and get some ideas from them on the right DACs to look at plus sourcing products they have interfaced with to do things like what you want to do. As much detail as possible will help.

If you do that, please reply here with a link to the new thread so we can follow it.

  • Thanks, but I've discussed this on the DAC forum and they referred me here.

  • Please post a link to there so I can see what they said. We do not want you to be passed around all the time, so thanks for pointing this out.

  • Sorry, but the project changed a bit over the last couple days. Since we posted on the DAC forum.

Which forum would be able to discuss things like circular memory or FIFO buffer type hardware, that would be able to clock out data around 200 MHz?

I'm not worried about processor speeds, and we have a DAC already in mind, just trying to figure out how to get data out of memory and onto a DAC input bus fast enough.

  • It sounds like you have cut your speed in half now. Which DAC do you have in mind?

I still think the DAC forum would be where someone knows which devices are common to interface with which DAC. But without knowing how you asked your question there or how they answered it, I am reluctant to send you back there. And I could be wrong about that, so not knowing more than this makes it tough to help you much.

A C6x DSP with an async/sync EMIF bus may work for you with a simple CPLD to latch data and forward the data in phases. But it does not feel like a good solution. Take a look at the TMS320C6457, for example.
