AM3352: AM335x DDR EOL and replace

Part Number: AM3352

Tool/software:

We are planning to replace the AM3352 DDR IC due to its end-of-life (EOL) status. The original DDR is DDR3-1600, and the new one is DDR3-1866. Size is the same.  According to the application notes for the AM335x EMIF tools, Steps 1B and 2 indicate that the values depend on the speed bin of the device. Does this mean we need to fill out the excel worksheet again to obtain new parameters? Can't our firmware continue using the existing parameters, given that our system only operates at a bandwidth of 800 Mbps?

Thank you.

Andy

  • Andy, you should be able to continue to use the DDR register configuration you have.  You might have an opportunity to slightly optimize the timings to take advantage of the faster speed bin, but the difference between 1600MTs and 1866MTs speed grades will not be much.

  • Hi, James, If we develop a new project using the new 1866MT/s DDR in the future, would you recommend configuring it with new parameters?

  • Yes, i would recommend that.  A new project (ie, a new board design) may also require you to change some of the impedance settings (termination and drive strength) for better signal integrity.
