AM3359: Using MAC Address as Serial Number for Debug Card

Part Number: AM3359

Tool/software:

Hello TI Team,

We have developed a debug card for our internal development and testing purposes, based on the AM3359 processor and running Arago Linux using the TI SDK. To help uniquely identify each card when connected to our network, we are considering using the LAN MAC address (MAC1) as the serial number, and plan to label this on the card during the production phase.

We have a few questions regarding this approach:

1. Is it advisable to use the MAC address as the PCB serial number(to identify the cards when it connected to network)? Is there any possibility that the MAC address could change at any point?
2. We have observed that the first 6 bytes of the MAC address are fixed, and the last 6 bytes are unique. Can we use the last 6 bytes alone as the serial number?
3. The MAC address becomes available only in the final production stage when the firmware is uploaded. However, we need the MAC address earlier in the process to label it on the PCB. Is there any tool or method available to retrieve or assign the MAC address before this stage?

We would appreciate your guidance on the above queries.

Thank you in advance.

BR,
Paul Jins
