Does DM814x AVB support is dependent on choice of PHY

Hi,

Just a quick question - I understand our DM814x EMAC subsystem supports AVB from MAC layer. Is there any dependency on PHY to enable this support? Can any Ethernet PHY would support this functionality.

Thanks in advance.

Prateek

  • Hi Prateek,

Currently there are no support for AVB.

I don't think (and am assuming this in our DM814x AVB design) that the manufacturer/type of the external PHY does not matter to the AVB functionality, as the 802.1AS timestamping is done at the EMAC level inside the DM814x.  This is what the new CPTS subsystem is for.

Currently the problem with AVB on the 814x is that there is no driver support for 802.1Qav (Shaping).  I'm hoping that will change soon!.

  • Is there 3rd party option available ?

    Thanks,

  • Prateek,

I have been looking around for getting AVB support on DM8148 platform for my design. Unfortunately, some of 802.1 AVB ethernet standards are in their early phase and you hardly find needed s/w support on Linux for these standards.

As I am not a big customer of DM8148 for TI, I cannot push TI to get the the needed s/w on DM8148 to support 802.1AS, 802.1QAV and QAT.

If there is a huge demand from different customers, you can expect an early support from TI but I can see that there are hardly few of us like Steve and others looking for AVB solution on DM8148 platform.

I am in touch with a third party and negotiating  a work package to have needed AVB  support on DM8148 for my needs.

So It looks like, at this moment you are on your own.
