AM67A: LPDDR4 bring up

Part Number: AM67A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM67, SYSCONFIG

Tool/software:

customer board boot from DFU can sometimes download tispl.bin, sometime can't finish tispl.bin downloading.

I think it is DDR problem, customer just copy the DDR layout from EVM board, did not do simulation by themself yet, so use EVM board IO configuration, only changed DDR Density from 16 to 8 as LPDDR4 device is 4GB on custom board. Also modified memory size in dts to 4GB.

Also modified memory size in dts to 4GB.

BTW, the uboot log of EVM shows 2GiB (effective 8 GiB), why 2GiB?

  • Tony,

    1. Have they tried to lower DDR frequency?
    2. How many boards have they tried, and do they all show the same issue?
    3. Is the customer able to connect through JTAG to visually inspect the DDR system address space?

    Regards,
    Kevin

  • Kevin,

    Customer adjust impedance according to simulation result.

    change memory size to 4GB in kernel dts already.

    Now can boot from DFU to UBOOT and flash eMMC. but boot from eMMC always hang during Kernel init, tried to lower DDR frequency to 1600 even can't boot up DFU.

    From the log, it did not init peripherals yet, is it still DDR unstable?

  • From the log, it did not init peripherals yet, is it still DDR unstable?

    It seems that DDR is working to some extent given that DDR must be functional to boot u-boot. It could still be marginally functional, but typically a reduction in DDR frequency would help resolve any marginalities.

    One thing I observed in a more recent Linux SDK is that the Linux device tree assumed 8GB DDR. Depending on which SDK the customer is using and whether or not they updated anything on the Linux device tree side to reflect that there is only 4GB could be related to the Linux kernel hangs.

    I'll have to see if I can dig up details on where I observed this previously.

    Regards,
    Kevin

  • #1. Linux SDK11.0

    #2. Changed device tree memory size from default 8GB to 4GB already.

    #3. Reduce DDR frequency to 1600MHz doesn't help, and even worse.

  • Tony,

    #2. Changed device tree memory size from default 8GB to 4GB already.

    Are there device tree carve outs that still point to 8 GB memory?

  • Tony,

    Is the customer using vision apps DTS overlay or just the evm dts? I will try to dig into this but can you share the code changes done to reduce the default DDR size?

    - Keerthy

  • using the SDK11 under AM67 product folder:

    https://www.ti.com/tool/download/PROCESSOR-SDK-LINUX-AM67A

    Changes:

    #1. sysconfig generated dtsi, changed size and impedance.

    #2. dts change:

    memory@80000000 {
    /* 4G RAM */
    reg = <0x00000000 0x80000000 0x00000000 0x80000000>,
    <0x00000008 0x80000000 0x00000000 0x80000000>;

  • Got dts file and log from customer:

    https://e2e.ti.com/cfs-file/__key/communityserver-discussions-components-files/791/k3_2D00_j722s_2D00_evm.dts

    kernel-log1.txt

  • Tony,

    A diff patch is better for review. Also kernel log is now looking different and see that you are able to proceed to mounting file system. Any specific changes?

    Welcome to Arago 2025.01!

    [ 1.983959] systemd[1]: Hostname set to <j722s-evm>."

    - Keerthy

  • Customer deleted some node from dts, each time hang on difference place, can't enter command line.

  • Tony,

    Which dts is being deleted? I am not getting a clear picture of what is improving.
