what about scaling the R channel of the RAW Bayer format only?

Scaling the RAW Bayer might not make sense on the first look, but if the factor between the raw image and the first pyramid level would be 1/2, passing the raw image to the scaler would give some meaningful result, some kind of brightness of each 2x2 Bayer section. Can you think of a way to do that in HW?

Is there an operation available in HW that could be misused to extract the R channel? E.g. some filtering operation where we set weights like 1, 0, 0, 0?

Alternatively, could we

1. Extract the R channel using ARM or DSP, write the result to DRAM
2. Compute pyramids using the MSC

Yes, if you can extract R channel from the bayer data, then it can potentially be used in MSC, though we have not tried it. But please note in 2x2 format, there is only single R pixel.

The ISP does all kinds of operations, including Debayering. May there be an ISP block that could do the red channel extraction if configured in some weird way?

Maybe, if debayering coefficients are set to unity and then VISS is updated to get colors output, it could be possible, but we haven't really tried it out, so can't confirm. 

Why do you want to extract one of the bayer color channel? Can you please help me understand this?
