For Resource Explorer, it is as you say - only to display relevant documentations/examples for the launchpad/device. Hence if both are the same, then it does not matter what you choose.

Other views like the Get Started or Connected Targets views will show the serial number:

Same goes when prompted to select a target to debug:

Those are where being able to differentiate would matter.
