SK-AM62-LP: Request for Guidance on Reducing Boot Time

Hi Team,

We are currently using the TI default image, and the system’s boot time is very high. Our requirement is to have the system up and running within 6 seconds.
To achieve this, we need to reduce the boot time. Could you please provide information on whether this is possible and the procedure to accomplish it?

Hi Bin,

We are trying to use Falcon mode following section 3.1.2.10 of the SDK Linux documentation, but the meta-ti patch links provided there are not valid for the K3 Falcon configuration.

For a Yocto build, is the guidance in section 3.1.2.10 sufficient to generate an image with Falcon mode enabled ?

I am really not familiar with Yocto and cannot explain if the meta-ti patches have any issue, but does the section 3.1.2.10.3 (Non-Yocto Users) instruction work for you?

Hi Bin,

We have not tried version 3.1.2.10.3 ( Non-Yocto Users ) yet; we will try it. We observed the timings below. According to my observation, Falcon mode reduces the SSBL timing, but what methods are available to reduce the kernel and init timings?

Following are the main factors in Linux boot time optimization.

- kernel devicetree: disable all unused modules/interfaces to reduce kernel init time;

- kernel kconfig: to reduce kernel Image file size, check .config and disable any unused '=y' kconfig options;

- disable unused services, in either sysvinit or systemd, depending on which one is used in your Linux system;

- once all the above optimization are done, add 'quiet' to kernel cmdline parameter to suppress most console messages.

Hi Bin,

Does disabling unused peripherals/modules in the kernel device tree also help reduce U-Boot boot time, or does it only affect the Linux kernel boot time?

Hi Gopal,

Kernel devicetree change won't affect U-Boot at all, U-Boot has its own copy of the devicetree in the U-Boot source code.
