AM623: Is there Profibus PA implementation with PRU-ICSS?

Part Number: AM623
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PROFIBUS

Dear Champ,

My customer is looking for a solution which can support Profibus PA Master to communicate with Profibus PA slave devices direclty.

Another appraoch is to have Profibus DP Master then convert Profibus DP to Profibus PA with couplers or links.

We found there is a reference design www.ti.com/.../TIDEP-0075 which uses AM57x with PRU-ICSS for ProfiNET slave and Profibus DP Master.

  1. What's the Profibus DP Master protocol provider? Is it from 3rd party or TI in house?
  2. Can customer take AM57x Profibus DP Master implementation to extend to Profibus PA (change to MBP transceiver)?
  3. Can Profibus DP Master implementation be implemented on AM62x which has only PRU-ICSS-M? Same question to Profibus PA Master?
  4. Does TI have plan to support Profibus PA Master and Slave respectively?

BR, Rich

This reference design has used stack from TMG but it was never productized

Can customer take AM57x Profibus DP Master implementation to extend to Profibus PA (change to MBP transceiver)?

TI does not have in house PROFIBUS DP or PA master stack

Can Profibus DP Master implementation be implemented on AM62x which has only PRU-ICSS-M? Same question to Profibus PA Master?

This is technically feasible but note that PRU firmware is also demo quality and not production ready

Does TI have plan to support Profibus PA Master and Slave respectively?

There are no concrete roadmap plans, and this will be opportunity driven. I see higher probability to enable Profibus DP and PA Slave options in near future via partners like TMG

  • Pratheesh,

Profibus PA runs at 31.25 kbps only not like Profibus DP. Is there a need to use PRU-ICSS to implement it?

Assuming Profibus Master protocol stack is feasible, can Profibus PA be implement on processor with regular UART plus external MBP module?

PRU-ICSS will be considering only if the combability with Profibus DP is required which needs high clock rate serial port for communication.

Any ready solution from TI can offer for Profibus DP Master even with 3rd party?

Any customer ever implement Profibus PA Master with our processor?

    BR, Rich

Yes - agreed, there is no PRU-ICSS offload needed unlike DP which requires 12Mbps max speed.
