AM2434: am243x EtherCAT RX link status

Part Number: AM2434

Hi,

New board.

I traced down link indication down to this pin - it gets "1" when link is established.

I use Manual MDIO mode. I can read PHY registers. PHY reports link.

ESC register 0x110 reads 0x1, which mean that not link detected.

PHY register 1 reads 0x786d , link indication in bit #2. Link detected.

Can you shed some light  - how ESC knows that there is a link?

Where to look?

Thanks

Rasty

  • Hi Rasty,

Can you shed some light  - how ESC knows that there is a link?

ESC DL Status Register is updated based on the MDIO MII link change event. Based on the link event status, DL Status will be set or cleared for the corresponding port.

ESC register 0x110 reads 0x1, which mean that not link detected.

PHY register 1 reads 0x786d , link indication in bit #2. Link detected.

We have seen similar issue where MDIO Link register bits are indicating that the link is up and also PHY status register bit is set indicating the link establishment but the DL Status was not getting updated with the link changes. This was more like timing race condition since the PRU and MDIO runs at different clock frequencies, hence the link change is not caught by by the PRU.

We made some enhancements in the link detection logic within the EtherCAT firmware (PINDSW-9140 in Release notes for Industrial Communications SDK 2025.00.00.08). You can test with the EtherCAT firmware available in Industrial Communications SDK AM243x - 2025.00.00.08.

Do let us know if migration to the latest firmware headers is resolving the link detection issue, or if you have any further queries.

    Regards,
    Aaron
