AM62P: Boot time reduction for Yocto Linux running om AM62P5

Part Number: AM62P

Hello Ti experts,image.pngThis is current state of my booting procedure with different setups mentioned in image above. As per the above image I've 2 questions and they are:

1. While booting Falcon mode boot in eMMC and the SD Card, the time required to boot using eMMC should be technically less than time required to boot from SD Card, Correct is I'm wrong. But, in my case why is time required for booting the same in both SD Card as well as eMMC in Falcon mode?
2. When used InitRAMfs in Falcon boot, the boot-time is increased, why is this happening?

Aditya T

  • Hi Aditya,

    I am routing your query to another team member for comments.

  • Hi Aditya,

    1. SD vs eMMC

    In falcon mode, the big optimization come from skipping A53 SPL and U-boot proper and jumping to TF-A and then the kernel.

    Storage time is only the time to read Linux appimage from MMC.

    Even if you compare the HS400 vs SD read time for ~20 MB (Linux appimage), the savings will be in the order couple hundred milliseconds only.

    Refer: software-dl.ti.com/.../DATASHEET_AM62PX_EVM.html

    2. Use of initramfs

    A full initramfs may increase the amount of data which needs to be read from MMC and then decompressed early in boot.
    So the extra read and decompression may increase the boot-time unless it's a tiny initramfs.

    If more clarifications are needed, can you share the full kernel logs along with the image sizes for these cases?

    Vinu

    This is fine now, I understood it.

    For this I've attached the console logs, also I'm not able to login when used initramfs

  • Hi Aditya,

    When used InitRAMfs in Falcon boot, the boot-time is increased, why is this happening?

    Were you able to boot properly earlier with intramfs and falconboot?

    I'm not able to login when used initramfs

    And are you unable to boot now?

  • Hello,
    By mistake I clicked on Resolved, but still I've not resolved.

    First of all sorry for delay, but I was busy with some other topics that's why I couldn't reply here.

    I want to mention one things that is the file /sbin/init which is present here does not works. I need to modify it to below
    /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

    #!/bin/sh

    mount -t proc none /proc
    mount -t sysfs none /sys

    sleep 5

    mount -t devtmpfs  dev  /dev

    ls /dev/ >> /tmp/log 2>&1
    echo "ls dev" $? >> /dev/ttyS2

    ls /dev/mmcblk1p2 >> /tmp/log 2>&1

    mount /dev/mmcblk1p2 /mnt/
    echo "Mount FS:" $? >> /dev/ttyS2

    umount /proc
    umount /sys

    exec switch_root /mnt/ /sbin/init

    /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

    And after modifying it to above mentioned content. The Linux boots from falcon mode using initramfs but the boot time is increased to 13secs which was 8 seconds with the same falcon mode but without using initramfs

    Can you guide me with this?

    Regards,
    Aditya T
