Alternate Power sequencing method for TMS320C6678

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCD7242, UCD9222, TMS320C6678

Hi,

We are planning to use TMS320C6678 in our design. We dont have FPGA or CPLD in our design. But for power seqencing of TMS320C6678 usage of UCD9222 and UCD7242 is recommonded in Hardware Design guidelines. UCD9222 requires PMBUS control. Since we dont have any FPGA or CPLD in our design could you suggest some other ICs/design which doesnt require control signals?

Thanks in advance.

  • The PMBUS is only used to configure the UCD9222 and isn't actively used to control the part during normal operations.  Only  the PMBUS clock, PMBUS data and ground are needed to communicate with the controller pod that programs the devices so a three pin header is the only connection needed.  Once the UCD9222 is programmed with it's configuration that information is programmed into non-volatile memory and retrieved when power is applied to the device.  You will still need to provide some logic to ensure that the power sequencing is followed even after the UCD9222 is programmed.  The UCD9222 cannot act as the controller for this sequencing.  You don't need a large CPLD for the job but you do need some logic that will monitor the power good signals and enable the next power supply in the sequence.
