AM62P: How to implement CPSW Proxy Client in Linux

Part Number: AM62P

Hi TI,
I want to verify the cpsw proxy client function on linux. I have done the following on the linux side:

1.enable config_ti_cpsw_proxy_client
2. applied device tree overlay: k3-am62p5-sk-ethfw.dtbo

but I’m not sure what I should do on the R5F core side.
I have flashed ethfw_server.release.appimage.hs_fs to the R5F core, but the Linux CPSW Proxy Client fails with timeout:
root@am62pxx-evm:~# dmesg | grep "cpsw"
[ 8.501238] ti_cpsw_proxy_client virtio1.ti.ethfw.ethdevice.-1.34: response timedout
[ 8.513222] ti_cpsw_proxy_client virtio1.ti.ethfw.ethdevice.-1.34: failed to get virtual port info
[ 8.522479] ti_cpsw_proxy_client virtio1.ti.ethfw.ethdevice.-1.34: rpmsg_dev_probe: failed: -5
[ 8.522503] ti_cpsw_proxy_client virtio1.ti.ethfw.ethdevice.-1.34: probe with driver ti_cpsw_proxy_client failed with error -5
root@am62pxx-evm:~# dmesg | grep "rpms"
[ 7.854831] virtio_rpmsg_bus virtio0: rpmsg host is online
[ 7.863977] virtio_rpmsg_bus virtio0: creating channel ti.ipc4.ping-pong addr 0xd
[ 7.876956] virtio_rpmsg_bus virtio0: creating channel rpmsg_chrdev addr 0xe
[ 7.979762] virtio_rpmsg_bus virtio1: rpmsg host is online
[ 7.984354] virtio_rpmsg_bus virtio1: creating channel ti.ethfw.ethdevice addr 0x22
[ 8.522479] ti_cpsw_proxy_client virtio1.ti.ethfw.ethdevice.-1.34: rpmsg_dev_probe: failed: -5
[ 8.522565] virtio_rpmsg_bus virtio1: msg received with no recipient
 so  Could you tell me:
  1. Which exact firmware should be flashed to R5F for CPSW Proxy?
  2. Do I need to enable any configuration in the R5F firmware?
  3. What is the correct setup for EthFw + CPSW Proxy Server?
 BR,
Dongcan

  • Hello,

I have fixed the issue where probing with the ti_cpsw_proxy_client . However, new problems have occurred. The logs from Linux and R5 are as follows.

  • Hi Dongcan,

Are there more prints on Linux beyond this line? Is the linux finishing to boot successfully? The error seen on the R5 side is an expected print and is a negative test included in the application to prevent linux from registering to reserved mcast addresses.

Can you please check the ifconfig after the boot is successful? Can you also confirm which document are you following to enable linux client for am62p?

The document which contains the details of EthFw client initialization and setup is here: software-dl.ti.com/.../CPSW-Proxy-Client.html

    Thanks and regards,
    Teja.

  • Hi Teja,
Thanks a lot for your quick and clear reply.
    To answer your questions:
    1. Linux boots up completely and successfully, no errors on Linux side.
    2. The 'reserved mcast' error on R5 is normal as you mentioned, I understand it’s expected.
    3. ifconfig on Linux shows eth0 UP and RUNNING, I can set IP address successfully.
    4. I followed the official TI document: software-dl.ti.com/.../CPSW-Proxy-Client.html.
The real problem I’m facing now:
    - I set IP: ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.100
    - When I ping 192.168.1.101, it always shows:
    “Destination Host Unreachable”
From R5 log, I found a key print:
    ETHFW: VIRT_PORT_INFO | S2C | switchPortMask=2000000 **macPortMask=0**
Is macPortMask=0 the expected default behavior for the Linux client on AM62Px?
    The log has been attached.

  • Hi Dongcan,

The issue seems to be due to missing TAP interface application which handles the shared memory interface traffic. So, please refer to the TAP interface application setup process, and then you would be able to get the response correctly. The documentation for Sitara Platforms is not available currently. Please follow the following Jacinto documentation for enabling TAP interface: https://software-dl.ti.com/jacinto7/esd/processor-sdk-rtos-j7200/08_02_00_05/exports/docs/ethfw/docs/user_guide/demo_ethfw_combined_top.html#intercore_linux_client_test

Please let me know if you face any issues.

    Thanks and regards,
    Teja.

  • Hi Teja,

Thank you very much for your support.
I have enabled the TAP interface application and launched the launch_tap.service successfully. The tap0 interface is created and the tapif application is running normally.
However, the network behavior is still the same as before:I still cannot ping the remote device, and there is no response.

I have two more questions to confirm:
    1. If I use the TAP interface application, do I still need to load the kernel module ti-cpsw-proxy-client.ko?
    2. Is this issue related to the firmware running on the R5-core? I only flashed  WKUP core with:

    --file=ethfw_server.release.appimage.hs_fs --operation=flash --flash-offset=0x80000

Is this firmware sufficient for the TAP interface to work?
    Please help me clarify these.

  • Hi Dongcan,

If I use the TAP interface application, do I still need to load the kernel module ti-cpsw-proxy-client.ko?

Yes. The TAP interface is a helper module for the Ethernet Proxy client for Linux. The proxy client is responsible for unicast and exclusive multicast messages, and the TAP interface is to handle the shared multicast and broadcast messages.

Is this issue related to the firmware running on the R5-core?

Flashing WKUP-R5 with EthFw-server example should be enough to enable the communication to both linux and WKUP-R5 core.

Can you share the EthFw server logs (WKUP-R5 logs) which includes prints till you add the static IP to MAC address (including the prints which would be generated after adding the static IP). This will help diagnose the behavior better.

Can you please confirm the version of MCU+ SDK that you are using and the Linux SDK version?

    Thanks and regards,
    Teja.

  • Hi Teja,
Thank you for your explanation and support.
I have tested it on my side. But I can ping through successfully even without loading the ti-cpsw-proxy-client.ko kernel module, only by using the TAP interface and configuring a static IP on tap0.
I would like to check with you whether this behavior is expected.
The previous ping failure was probably due to my hardware issue.

  • Hi Dongcan,

This behavior is expected, but the real life implications would render this not a viable option. If you are looking to  handle Unicast, Multicast and broadcast messages, then you need EthFw to be enabled, which needs ti-cpsw-proxy-client module as well. This enables the direct DMA channels from CPSW to A53 core with linux.

By only enabling TAP interface you are only using shared memory interface, which would increase load on WKUP-R5 and also comes with a limitation on throughput from linux, since shared memory path is resource intensive.

Are you running the default ethfw examples? Did you make any change to the appication configuration?

EthFw on this release is tested to be functional. But let us try to check if we can reproduce this issue in our setup. Please expect a response in 3-4 days.

    Thanks and regards,
    Teja.

  • Hi Teja,
    Thanks for your detailed explanation.
now I have tested both modes on my side:
    • I can communicate properly by using only ti-cpsw-proxy-client.ko with eth0
    • I can also communicate properly by using only the TAP interface (tap0)
I am running the default EthFw examples and have not modified any application configuration.
    Thank you for your support.

  • Hi Dongcan,

I can communicate properly by using only ti-cpsw-proxy-client.ko with eth0

Are you able to get ping response as well? We would suggest you to flush the ARP table and try to ping the eth0. Please also try to run a multicast iperf as well.

CMD to flush ARP entries in Host PC: sudo ip neigh flush all

    Thanks and regards,
    Teja.

  • Hi Teja,
Yes, I can successfully get ping responses using only ti-cpsw-proxy-client.ko with eth0, without using the TAP interface.

  • Hi Dongcan,

This confirms that the unicast and exclusive multicast data paths are verified. Can you also try to run multicast iperf where the DuT is running udp iperf server and Host PC is running multicast iperf client? This needs both proxy client module and the TAP interface. This confirms the full capabilities of EthFw being tested.

On client side (on external pc's linux terminal)

iperf -c 224.0.0.251 -u --ttl 5 -t 5 -b 10M --bind <ip_addr> (interface ip from which you want to send shared mcast traffic)

    On server side (on linux client): iperf -s -u -B 224.0.0.251 -i 1

    Thanks and regards,
    Teja.
