Spectrum Digital TMS320VC5510 DSK (TMDSDSK5510)

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CCSTUDIO

Hello all, this is my first post on the forums.

I'm having trouble figuring out how to connect to the DSK via USB. I have a Windows 7 32-bit OS. Here's basically what I've tried:

1) Installation CD for CCS v3.1 came with the DSK. Installed it directly onto my system. No issues with installation. 5510 DSK Diagnostic Utility didn't recognize the DSK at first, but I changed the compatibility to Windows XP (SP2). Worked like a charm, no issues. Ran all tests, including additional tests included with the software (Codec, Memory, DSP, and Switches), no issues. Started CCStudio 3.1, keep getting an error message. Screencap here:

Attempting to set compatibility to any version of Windows will result in the IDE failing to even start. Don't know if I'll be able to program the DSP like this.

2) Installed CCS v5 (free license). Tried to connect using "Target Configuration" utility from the View menu. Added a "New Target Configuration File". Attempted "General Setup". From the drop-down list of "Connections", there were many Spectrum Digital emulators available. From those, I tried either DSK5510, TMS320C5510, or TMS320C5510A. Save, Test Connection. No good. I'm not sure which Connection to use, I've basically tried all that have C5510 included in the Board or Device list.

Right now I'm trying to install CCS v4 on a different system (Windows 7 64-bit, as opposed to 32-bit) and possibly try CCS v5 on that system as well. Gonna see how that works out but right now any input is greatly appreciated.

**Also, I know the DSK is an old model, but its what I have. I don't have the money to get another DSK right away, as this is for a sponsored course project. The target end product is a speaker recognition device for verifying user identities (matching their voice to their voice profile).

Thanks,

Jordan

  • Also, I forgot to mention I've tried CCS 3.1 in a virtual machine running Windows XP (with XP mode installed on Windows 7).

I've tried CCS 4 and 5, no good but I realized that I don't need the emulation, I can just simulate the device for now... I believe. Still trying to make sense of what's going on here.

    Thanks in advance,

    Jordan

  • Hi Jordan,

With CCS4 or CCS5 I believe you should use Connection: "Spectrum Digital DSK-EVM-eZdsp onboard USB Emulator".

I've had success connecting to C5509ADSK & C5416DSK this way...

Do you have an external JTAG emulator like XDS100 that you can try also?

I've got no experience using CCS with virtual machines, so I'll toss you over to the CCS/Emulator experts if we cant get you up and running.

    Hope this helps,
    Mark

  • Hi Jordan,

I have the 5509A DSK, but I think it's the same story.

    A) It seems that you can only use the built-in JTAG emulator when running the CCS v3.1 that comes with the DSK.  Whatever drivers are present are not installed with CCStudio 3.1, and I've never figured out how to link the two.

    B) If you have a standard USB2 JTAG emulator for the C5510, then you should be able to plug that in to the 5510 DSK and run CCStudio 3.1 or CCStudio 3.3

Basically, since I needed a separate USB2 JTAG emulator for my custom C55x hardware, I'm just using that same USB2JTAG for the DSK. You might have similar luck unless you don't have a standalone emulator and can't justify the cost.

  • Hey all,

Thanks for the help. I was able to get the DSK to connect with CCS 4.
