MSP430FR5989: Programming difficulties when parallel reprogramming the MSP430FR5989IPMR with MSP-GANG

Part Number: MSP430FR5989

Hello, I'm trying to program the MSP430FR5989IPMR with an MSP-GANG using JTAG. This works perfectly with erased modules. However, when the modules are already flashed and more than six are connected to one flasher, I encounter connection problems.

Initial analysis revealed that the flasher sends a high signal to the TCK before the JTAG is fully enabled, and that port it's still acting like a pulldown resistor, which then causes all of the signals to collapse. (The modules are powered externally, the chips are on the module and the Signal "Test"  has a pulldown resitor, and "RST" a pullup Resitor, both R~50k.)

Attached are oscilloscope images (green is "Test", purple "Reset", turquoise "TCK").

  • Hello Christian,

So when you program just only one MCU using MSP-GANG, the programming will be successful, but when you program six MCU connecting with MSP-GANG, it will be failed? Could you please share the hardware connection figure? And could you please try to use MSP-GANG to power the MSP430 devices?

    BR,

    Janz Bai

  • Hello Janz,

Yes, when I try to re-program with 5 or less it will always work, 6 and 7 is the edge where it begins to fail and with 8 it will always fail.

When powered by the MSP-GANG it works for 8, as long as the Vcc settle Time is 0.1s or less. With more time it will be unreliable when more than 5 MCUs (Sometimes with 6 MCUs working, but with more never working). The Error Message is always "ERROR 23: MCU device initialization failed."

The supplying with the Programmer wouldn't be possible in the production.

  • Hello Christian,

Thanks for your confirming. About this issue, I need to discuss with our cooperation third-party Elprotronic who produce MSP-GANG. It may need some time, and before we get response. Could you please keep connecting to max 5 devices programming at the same time when producing.

    BR,

    Janz Bai
