Linux serial console of AM335x-PSP-04.06.00.03 + Sitara Linux SDK version 5.03.01.00 on Beaglebone Rev. A3

Hi,

I installed AM335x-PSP-04.06.00.03 kernel + Sitara Linux SDK version 5.03.01.00 file system on my Beaglebone Rev. A3 board. But linux login prompt never appear from the serial console(I used ttyO1 instead of default ttyO0). I need to enter linux console to change DHCP setting of ethernet port to static IP.

  • What happens if you press ENTER on the console?

    also, I'm not sure why you changed the console to ttyO1but you might want to check you /etc/inittab file to make sure you spawn a console to ttyO1 since by default you probably only have one being spawned on ttyO0.  Look for a line like:

    S:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 115200 ttyO0

  • Beaglebone uses ttyO0. Also since it uses USB as the console, you need to switch the console,

    assuming you are using Teraterm on Host, use New connection and select com port related to Beagle bone (This new com port will be created when UAR Tcable is connected to HOST)

  • when I press ENTER on the console, the teminal response me with a new line. I do not have a usb link to beaglebone usb port and this is the reason why I want to switch to UART1. I connect my host WINDOWS 7 serial port through beaglebone UART1.

    And here is uEnv.txt file that I used for linux kernel:

    Since this serial link UART1 is the only one path that I can talk to beaglebone board(we do not have a DHCP server so beaglebone ethernet wont work by default), there is no way for me to access linux console and make any changes there.

  • What serial port are you trying to use on the beaglebone?  There is no serial port on the board aside from the USB serial port.

    What happens when you use console=ttyO0,115200n8 as the console?

    Lastly, if you want to change the inittab you can do that by mounting the rootfs partition on a Linux host and modifying the file there.

    Finally I mounted rootfs on tf card to my linux host and change inittab file as you suggested. Now I can enter linux console on ttyO1 now.
