DM816x Video Latency Test

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TVP7002

Hi All,

I'm working with the following hw and sw components:

Hardware: EVM-DM8168-REV G, DRAM: 2 GiB

Software: EZSDK 5.03.01.15: (http://software-dl.ti.com/dsps/dsps_public_sw/ezsdk/5_03_01_15/index_FDS.html )

Problem (or question):

Using the EVM we are able to capture 1080p@60fps from the component input on the EVM and display the video properly to some HDMI device,in this test we are not encoding, just live preview in order to measure the latency that is introduced by the EVM.

According with the Technical Reference Manual (http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/sprugx8/sprugx8.pdf) the video is captured by the TVP7002 which performs the conversion, then it is delivered to the HDVPSS (parallel video input), which, in this case, just pass the video to the display controller. (please see Fig.2-1 page 354).

We measured the latency, our test was done by aiming a camera at dark image, except upper left corner was bright white. The bright white is first blocked (using your hand for example), then displayed. By using a scope to look at the most significant bit on the camera and HDMI out, the scope triggers on the MSB going high on the camera HDMI connector, then watch for MSB going high on DVI out. With our test we got a delay of 5 to 6 frames at 60fps, which is not suitable according with our requirements.

1.We noticed that the demo given by TI is also encoding the stream, this can be affecting the delay, Does TI has some loopback (only) demo that we can use to test?
This can allow us to do a more accurate test.

2. Has anybody tested it before? Maybe someone in TI has done this test before, Did you get the same results? Could you give me some advice or suggestion about how to decrease this latency in the DM8168?

Any help regarding this topic will be appreciated,

Thanks in advance,
-David
