MSP432E401Y: XDS110 bootloader update issue

Part Number: MSP432E401Y
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UNIFLASH, TMDSEMU110-U

Dear support team,

I am programming the MSP432E401YTPDTR with the boot_loader per this instruction: https://software-dl.ti.com/ccs/esd/documents/xdsdebugprobes/emu_xds110.html

By accident, I did program the boot_loader.axf file instead of the .bin file

C:\ti\ccs2100\ccs\ccs_base\common\uscif\xds110>xdsdfu.exe -b boot_loader.axf -r

Now the XDS110 cannot be detected anymore with the laptop, neither the unlocking of the decie works when I put pin 97 to GND and power up the USB port.

Is there any other method to enable access to the device and reprogram the bootloader again?

Thanks and regards,

 Thomas

  • Hello,

Thank you for the detailed description. For the recovery options of this, kindly see below:

Recovery option 1: force the ROM bootloader (the method you attempted)

The MSP432E401Y contains a factory ROM bootloader that cannot be erased, and it is entered by holding the JTAG TDO pin low while power is applied. Pin 97 is the correct pin for the 128-pin PDT package (PC3/TDO/SWO). Since, the procedure did not work, please check the following points:

    1. Perform a complete power cycle. Remove the USB cable entirely for about 10 seconds and remove any other supply to the board (BoosterPack or target-side 3.3 V / 5 V). The bulk capacitors on the 3.3 V rail can otherwise hold the device up long enough that the boot pin is never re-sampled.

    2. Observe the correct order. Apply the ground connection to TDO first, then plug in the USB cable, and keep TDO grounded until enumeration on the host has completed. Only then remove the connection.

    3. Look for the correct USB device. In ROM bootloader mode the board does not appear as an XDS110. It enumerates as VID 0x1CBE, PID 0x00FF, "Tiva Device Firmware Update", serial number 00000000, Mode: DFU. If the corresponding driver is not bound, xdsdfu -e can report no device even though the board is present, so please also check Windows Device Manager and inspect the hardware IDs. Please close Code Composer Studio and UniFlash beforehand (TICloudAgent will otherwise claim the device) and run the command prompt as Administrator.

If the DFU device appears, please run:

    xdsdfu -b boot_loader.bin -r

Allow up to 5–7 minutes for this to complete, then unplug and replug the board and verify with xdsdfu -e. Once the probe is in DFU mode again, write the firmware:

    xdsdfu -m
    xdsdfu -f firmware_<version>.bin -r

Please note the file extension carefully: xdsdfu requires the .bin files.

Recovery option 2: reprogram over JTAG using a second debug probe

This method works regardless of the state of the flash, and it is the one case where the .axf file is in fact the correct file to use.

    1. Connect a second XDS-class debug probe (for example the standalone TMDSEMU110-U) to the JTAG header of the XDS110's MSP432E401Y.

    2. Power the affected board, ideally from a supply that is not a USB port on the same PC as the second probe, to avoid ground-loop issues.

    3. In CCS, create a target configuration for the MSP432E401Y in JTAG mode and start a debug session using the second probe.

    4. Connect to the target, load [CCS INSTALL DIR]\ccs\ccs_base\common\uscif\xds110\boot_loader.axf, and run the target.

    5. Terminate the session, power the board down and disconnect the second probe. Then check with xdsdfu -e: the probe should now be in DFU mode, and you can write the firmware .bin as described above.

The full procedure is also documented under "Flashing the bootloader" in the XDS110 page you referenced.
