DRA821U: Yocto buildchain, rebuildung ti-dm firmware

Part Number: DRA821U
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: J7EXPCXEVM, DRA821

Hello experts,

currently we are evaluating the DRA821. We are using 721EXCPXEVM and J7EXPCXEVM boards.
We use for building the linux system the Ti provided yocto layers.

Since we plan to use the MCU1_0 for our application we need a way of building the firmware. Within the yocto layers the ti-dm firmware is checked out from the repository git://git.ti.com/git/processor-firmware/ti-linux-firmware.git

Since the firmware is pre-compiled, is there a way to compile it on our own? In detail the firmware

ipc_echo_testb_mcu1_0_release_strip.xer5f

What are the sources needed to this?

  • Hi ,

    The way to compile firmware is with the RTOS SDK: https://software-dl.ti.com/jacinto7/esd/processor-sdk-rtos-j7200/11_02_01_01/exports/docs/psdk_rtos/docs/user_guide/index.html

    Once it is compiled, you can create a bbappend to use your own firmware.

    Best,
    Jared

  • Hi Jared,

    I work together with Ralph on this topic. Please let me provide a couple of further information to describe our issue more detailled.

    We use Yocto to build u-boot. The meta-ti version is tag: 11.01.13 (266ea0ab30aa5bf6db67ab42a6bb21b65d24aa50)

    For the R5F, we use ti-processor-sdk-rtos-j7200-evm-10_01_00_04/pdk_j7200_10_01_00_25.
    We build with the SDK as follows:
    - Make command
    -> make -s ipc_echo_testb_freertos BOARD=j7200_evm CORE=mcu1_0
    - Resulting binary:
    -> Ipc_echo_testb_mcu1_0_release_strip.xer5f

    By default, Yocto uses precompiled firmware images for the R5F in the `ti-linux-fw.inc` recipe. These come from the following repository: "git.ti.com/git/processor-firmware/ti-linux-firmware.git". As a test, we modified the Yocto recipe so that our updated R5F firmware version is used instead of the precompiled version from the repository.

    Unfortunately, when we compile the R5F firmware from the processor SDK using Yocto and u-boot, it does not work on the evaluation board.
    U-boot starts up and the boot process is successful, so the mcu1_0 core is, in principle, doing “something.”
    However, after booting, IPC communication with mcu1_0 and mcu1_1 does not work. IPC with mcu2_0 and mcu2_1 (also compiled using the SDK) works.

    Among others, the following error message appears during boot:
    k3_r5f_rproc r5f@41000000: Core 1 is already in use. No rproc commands work
    k3_r5f_rproc r5f@41400000: Core 2 is already in use. No rproc commands work
    I’m attaching the complete boot output.

    This raises the following questions for us:
    • What is, in principle, the correct procedure for replacing the firmware for mcu1_0 in a Yocto context? Is it enogh to replace it in u-boot-ti.inc and ti-dm-fw.bb or are there other places required to get a working solution.
    • On what basis was the mcu1_0 firmware version created in the TI Git repository (SDK version, `make` command, compiler flags, etc.)?
    • What is the best way for us to reproduce this version?

    An additional note:
    If we replace tispl.bin (located in /run/media/boot-mmcblk1p1) we created with the original files (based on the firmware repo) it works.

    Thanks a lot in advance for your help!

    Best regards

    Markus

  • Hi  ,

    We use Yocto to build u-boot. The meta-ti version is tag: 11.01.13 (266ea0ab30aa5bf6db67ab42a6bb21b65d24aa50)

    For the R5F, we use ti-processor-sdk-rtos-j7200-evm-10_01_00_04/pdk_j7200_10_01_00_25.

    Why are you mixing SDK versions?

    Additionally, the MCU1_0 needs to run the dm code, so your firmware will have to include that.

    Yocto doesn't pull MCU1_0 ipc_echo_test if you look at the IPC_FW_LIST:

    IPC_FW_LIST:j7200 =   "              ${MCU_1_1_FW} ${MCU_2_0_FW} ${MCU_2_1_FW}"

    Why are you running your application on the MCU1_0 core?

    Best,
    Jared

  • Hi  ,

    Yocto doesn't pull MCU1_0 ipc_echo_test if you look at the IPC_FW_LIST:

    thats not the full truth. As I wrote above the firmware for MCU1_0 is pulled in ti-dm-fw.bb.

    Our only problem is only MCU1_0. The "other" R5F cores which are loaded afterwards work perfectly fine when we build them with ti-processor-sdk-rtos-j7200-evm-10_01_00_04. If we build a new firmware for MCU1_0 and exchange the tispl.bin we have the following behavior:

    - MCU2_0 and MCU2_1 work

    - MCU1_1 does not work anymore even if the firmware was not touched

    - MCU1_0 does not work anymore

    Why are you mixing SDK versions?

    We analyzed the firmware image ipc_echo_testb_mcu1_0_release_strip.xer5f that is pulled by ti-dm-fw.bb. It contains the version string 11.1.0-REL.PSDK.11.01.00.04. Thats why we picked this SDK. It was not our preferred approach to figure it out like this.

    Is there a better suited SDK version?

    We also tried the procedure with ti-processor-sdk-rtos-j7200-evm-11_02_00_02 but the results were much worse. The DRA821 was not even booting after the tispl.bin was exchanged.

    Why are you running your application on the MCU1_0 core?

    For our target application we will run applications on all cores. For sure MCU1_0 will have to do the boot as well.

    Thanks a lot in advance for your help!

    Best regards

    Markus

  • Hi ,

    Is there a better suited SDK version?

    What config are you using for your Yocto build? There are changes to DM code between versions of the SDK. I would use the same RTOS SDK as the Yocto config you are using.

    Have you tested building the firmware, and then rebuilding tispl.bin using the Linux SDK make files (after subbing out the ./board-support/prebuilt-images/ti-dm/j7200/ipc_echo_testb_mcu1_0_release_strip.xer5f)?

    Best,
    Jared

  • Hi  ,

    What config are you using for your Yocto build? There are changes to DM code between versions of the SDK. I would use the same RTOS SDK as the Yocto config you are using.

    Could you please give us a combination of SDK linux and SDK RTOS that is supposed to work?

    If I 'm for example using version 11_02_01_03 for processor SDK and linux SDK the folder yocto-build/configs/processor-sdk does not contain a version 11_02_01_03. There is only 11.02.05.02 or 11.02.08.02 but not exactly 11_02_01_03. Does this work together with processor SDK 11_02_01_03?

    Have you tested building the firmware, and then rebuilding tispl.bin using the Linux SDK make files (after subbing out the ./board-support/prebuilt-images/ti-dm/j7200/ipc_echo_testb_mcu1_0_release_strip.xer5f)?

    We use the Yocto approach.

    The mayor question for us is: How can we rebuild the MCU1_0 firmware that is pulled in by ti-dm-fw.bb.

    I would really appreciate an answer on this.

    Best regards

    Markus

  • Hi ,

    For the config, I would use: processor-sdk-gateway-11.02.01-config.txt

    ./oe-layertool-setup.sh -f configs/processor-sdk-gateway/processor-sdk-gateway-11.02.01-config.txt

    To replace the MCU1_0 firmware, I would create a new meta layer with a ti-dm-fw.bbappend.

    $ tree meta-jared/
    meta-jared/
    ├── conf
    │   └── layer.conf
    └── recipes-bsp
        └── ti-dm-fw
            ├── files
            │   └── ipc_echo_testb_mcu1_0_release_strip.xer5f
            └── ti-dm-fw.bbappend

    4 directories, 3 files

    The ipc_echo_testb_mcu1_0_release_strip.xer5f is the renamed binarty that was built using the RTOS SDK (ipc_echo_testb_freertos_mcu1_0_release_strip.xer5f).

    $ cd <path/to/psdk/rtos>
    $ SOC=j7200 SDK_IMAGE=default ./sdk_builder/scripts/setup_psdk_rtos.sh --install_toolchain
    $ export TOOLS_INSTALL_PATH=$HOME/ti
    $ cd pdk_j7200_11_02_01_08/packages/ti/build
    $ make ipc_echo_testb_freertos SOC=j7200 BOARD=j7200_evm CORE=mcu1_0
    $ ls ../binary/ipc_echo_testb_freertos/bin/j7200_evm/ipc_echo_testb_freertos_mcu1_0_release_strip.xer5f
    ../binary/ipc_echo_testb_freertos/bin/j7200_evm/ipc_echo_testb_freertos_mcu1_0_release_strip.xer5f

    The ti-dm-fw.bbappend contains the following:

    ILESEXTRAPATHS:prepend := "${THISDIR}/files:"

    SRC_URI:append:j7200 = " file://ipc_echo_testb_mcu1_0_release_strip.xer5f"

    do_install:prepend:j7200() {
        cp ${WORKDIR}/ipc_echo_testb_mcu1_0_release_strip.xer5f ${S}/${DM_FW_DIR}/
    }

    Best,
    Jared

  • Hi  ,

    sorry for the late response. It works when I use your recommended versions!

    Thanks for your help!
